ᐅ Kallax connector parts don’t hold – is this a known issue?

Hello everyone,

Lately, I have noticed that the connecting parts of my Kallax shelf, like the small clips and connectors, simply do not hold properly. They often slip out or are not tight enough, which makes the entire shelf feel wobbly. I have made sure to assemble the connections according to the instructions.

I wonder if this issue with the connectors is generally known, or if I might be doing something wrong? It mainly concerns the elongated connectors that are supposed to hold the panels together.

Has anyone else experienced something similar? Are there replacement parts or modifications that could solve this problem? I would also be interested in tips on tools or techniques that could sustainably improve the stability.

Thank you in advance for your insights!

If the clips do not hold properly, check if they are installed the right way around. Sometimes this is the cause. If so, the only solution is replacement or repair using adhesive.

Basically, the connectors in Kallax are sufficient for normal use, but if you disassemble the shelf frequently, the material around the joints can become worn out. Then, there is hardly any stability.

Thanks in advance for the quick responses and tips!

@Ramon4 mentions manufacturing tolerances and possible wear and tear. That probably applies here, as I disassembled and reassembled the shelving unit several times, especially during the move. Some of the drill holes also seem slightly damaged in a few spots.

@RENMA talks about Minifix connectors, which sounds interesting. So far, I have only used the original clips. Does anyone know if these can be added afterward without having to completely rebuild the shelving unit?

I also like the idea of using spacers to help the clips hold better – but it’s important to me that this solution remains reversible in case the shelving unit needs to be taken apart again.

Can you share more about alternative connection methods or tips on handling spare parts from Ikea? Is the effort worthwhile?

Exactly, Minifix connectors are modular and usually designed for shelves with 16 or 18 mm (about 5/8 or 3/4 inch) panel thickness. Kallax uses MDF with approximately 15 mm (5/8 inch) thickness, which generally still works. However, you need to drill appropriate holes or enlarge existing ones. This requires some craftsmanship but is doable. This way you can reinforce the shelf without having to buy entirely new furniture.

Usually, you need to separate at least the panels to install them. Completely rebuilding is not necessarily required, but you cannot simply screw them onto partly assembled modules.

If you have some DIY skills, the effort is worthwhile; otherwise, you can also add reinforcements with metal brackets on the backside, which also increases stability.

Insert the Minifix, and nothing will wobble anymore. Just look up the instructions for these connectors; using a drill makes it easy.

I think it’s great that this thread brings so much input.

Regarding the move: I can understand if a clip breaks quickly during that process. Just try not to take the retail unit apart and put it back together too often.

Sometimes a new pack of original clips helps, as they might become brittle over time. Fingers crossed that you get the shelf stable again soon!
