Hello everyone,

I am considering adding inserts to my already assembled Kallax shelf unit to better customize the layout. Has anyone had experience with retrofitting inserts like drawers, doors, or compartments into a finished Kallax shelf? I am especially interested in how it works from a craftsmanship perspective, whether the unit needs to be taken apart, and if the stability is affected. Perhaps you also have tips on which inserts are easiest to retrofit or what to watch out for. I would appreciate any feedback, including estimates on the time and effort involved. Thanks in advance!

Hi! Yes, I’ve done that – it’s not as complicated as you might think. The key is to closely examine how the original is constructed beforehand. You can often hang the inserts in place or secure them with small screws without having to disassemble the entire unit.

I installed drawers myself, which fit perfectly into the compartments. Stability was not an issue as long as you don’t make major modifications. Tip: Take your time and don’t rush, and you’ll be happy with the result. Good luck! ;-)

Good morning,

Here’s a summary:

1. Shelf units like Kallax are usually designed modularly, so you don’t need major disassembly to insert components.

2. Drawer and door modules are made to be easily inserted. If you build custom inserts yourself, be sure to maintain precise measurements.

3. It’s important not to cut into or weaken any load-bearing elements, as this would compromise stability.

4. If you want to fully disassemble the shelf, it can even become more stable by adding extra cross-bracing, for example.

My advice: Check the assembly instructions for Kallax – they often include tips on inserting components. And always use the appropriate drill, don’t rush the process.

Best regards!

Most inserts are attached with metal guides or clips that simply click into the Kallax openings. Do not fully disassemble the shelf, as this is usually not necessary. Stability is hardly affected if you do not remove any panels.

Exactly. If you’re unsure where the load-bearing interior walls are located, it’s best to refer to the construction plan from Kallax.

I recently added suitable doors to my open shelves, which can be attached easily with small hinges. I didn’t need to disassemble the shelving unit. The important thing is that the screws have a solid hold; it’s best to use a small pilot drill for this.

If you want to install drawers later, make sure the drawer slides fit well and that the weight is evenly distributed; otherwise, it could cause misalignment over time.

I can definitely confirm that! For my Kallax, I hung doors on it and added a few boxes with casters – it was super easy.

A small screwdriver and a bit of patience are all you need, and the result looks really good. Plus, the shelf stays sturdy, so you don’t have to work on the big panels. Enjoy! 🙂
