ᐅ Has anyone installed inserts or organizers into their Kallax shelves afterwards?

Hello everyone,

I am considering adding inserts to my already assembled Kallax shelf unit to better customize the layout. Has anyone had experience with retrofitting inserts like drawers, doors, or compartments into a finished Kallax shelf? I am especially interested in how it works from a craftsmanship perspective, whether the unit needs to be taken apart, and if the stability is affected. Perhaps you also have tips on which inserts are easiest to retrofit or what to watch out for. I would appreciate any feedback, including estimates on the time and effort involved. Thanks in advance!

Good afternoon,

I would like to add a few steps that might help you:

1. First, measure the internal dimensions of your shelf compartment accurately to ensure the inserts fit well.
2. Pay attention to any possible brackets or hanging systems in the shelf and how the inserts will be attached.
3. For custom-made inserts: use plywood panels for greater stability.
4. Drawers often require runners or slides, which usually need to be mounted separately.

Screws need a secure hold; it’s best to pre-drill small pilot holes

This is very important, otherwise the wood can split or the screw will fit loosely.

I hope this helps!

Usually, inserts can simply be slid or hung in place. Doors are attached with hinges, and drawers require sliding rails. Completely disassembling is unnecessary, but be careful not to damage any load-bearing parts.

How it works technically and whether you have to take the shelf apart for it

Hello,

When I installed my Kallax, I didn’t take it apart. Most inserts are designed to fit without major disassembly. It’s important to use the correct screws and drill bits to ensure everything holds securely.

If you want to be completely sure: mark the spots where you plan to drill beforehand, and work slowly and carefully. A light pencil marking helps prevent slipping.

I think that if you take a bit of time, retrofitting it is quite doable. Good luck!
