Hello

I have completed the plumbing installation. The fittings are installed for tile sizes of 30 x 90 cm (12 x 36 inches) or 60 x 60 cm (24 x 24 inches).
At the moment, I am considering alternatively covering the walls in the shower area with painted glass.
Has anyone done this already and can share their experience and costs?

Hello Olli,

I can't share any personal experience with showers, but in our kitchen, we replaced the usual tiled backsplash above the stove and countertops with painted glass.

The glass is an extremely low-maintenance alternative to tiles—mainly because it provides one smooth surface without grout lines.

Based on our experience, the cost depends partly on the size of the glass area installed but also on any necessary cutouts in the glass.

Since you will probably have significantly fewer light switches and outlets in your shower than we do in our kitchen walls 😀, that shouldn’t be an issue.

If I were you, I’d ask your kitchen installer which glazier they would recommend for your project and get a quote from them.

Regards,

Dirk

Hello Dirk

Yes, the seamless surface is also the reason I am looking into this.
Yesterday, I inquired with a glazier.
I should receive an offer by the end of next week for 12.7m² (137 sq ft) with 7 openings.

What about lime? Do you not see any issues with it?
Many want to avoid glass partitions, but you are now planning to add glass.
Why do people want to avoid tiles or grout?

Hi Yvonne,

Limescale is not really an issue for us. The water hardness is 5.7°dH.
I don’t always understand the decision to skip a glass wall.
Any deposits like limescale, for example, don’t just disappear on tiles; they’re just less visible.
With painted glass instead of tiles, I assume cleaning is easier because there are no grout lines.
Also, I think something like that fits our house better.
Alternatively, I had considered engineered stone.
