Hello dear fellow home builders...
Now we are in the house and the weather is nice, so we’re focusing on the garden first rather than dealing with the leftover tasks inside. :p
Here is our current plan for the garden.
1. What do you think of it overall? Is it laid out and planned sensibly, or does something seem completely out of place?
2. First, we want to sow grass seed this weekend. The soil has already been fully tilled, and right now I’m clearing it of weeds, stones, etc. What ground surface should I choose for the play area? Is grass the best option there, or would bark mulch be better? What are the pros and cons?
3. We plan to border the play area with berry bushes next. What should I keep in mind when planting raspberries, blackcurrants, redcurrants, and gooseberries? Can they be planted next to each other? Do they all tolerate full sun well? The spot gets almost full sun all day.
4. In the vegetable garden, I’d like to create a strawberry bed this year. What are some nice options? I don’t like it when beds simply end in bare soil. Is there a way to create a nice border or edging?
I would really appreciate lots of comments and ideas. 🙂
Best regards
By the way, we will only be working on the back area for now—so grass and the play area this year. The rest will follow next year… The plan is for it to look like this eventually….

Don’t you have the problem of constantly getting sand inside the house? After playing in the sandbox, I always have to do a thorough cleanup before they turn the living room into a desert,... If there was still sand under the swing and other play equipment, they would never be allowed to go in or out by themselves. Yes, that definitely needs to be considered. Our youngest will turn 3 this autumn, and the other two are 9 and 13. So their use of the swings and such is moderate, and they’re old enough to shake themselves off. They enter the house after playing through the utility room door, since the play area is in the north garden 😉
But if there are better alternatives to sand, we’re open to any suggestions!

Unfortunately, I don’t have an online diary. But I’d be happy to share some pictures from my earlier floor plan discussion when I get the chance. The interior is still far from finished. The large door is missing, the living room door is missing, only one of the three toilets is installed, and only one of the three washbasins as well... I won’t even start on the chaotic rooms like the basement and utility room. But that’s okay for us; we’re doing everything step by step... That’s just how it is when you don’t build a turnkey home but still want a lot... The budget is limited. 🙂 But we already feel very comfortable here. 😀
On the plan, you can see the tree that marks the play area? It’s an old apple tree, about 3m (10 feet) tall or so, and in the afternoon its shade falls exactly on the play area. That’s really nice. And the sandbox will be placed under a climbing frame, which is also always shaded! That’s great. I’d definitely be interested to see how everything has turned out now. 😉The apple tree is fantastic. You couldn’t really tell how big it was from the first picture.

This is an option for us. The terrace won’t be built until at least next year. Financially, it’s not possible any other way. Until then, the gravel has to be enough. And the tool shed, etc., will only be built in two or even three years... Until then, there will be grass there, because otherwise the clay soil turns to mud immediately when it rains... That’s not acceptable. We just can’t do everything at once... We also can’t do everything at once – financially, it’s not feasible.
At the moment, I’m not sure whether the workers for the terrace will need to come back with an excavator or a truck (additional gravel) because the current gravel base might not be sufficient. Then they would have to deliver over our topsoil, and the heavy truck will leave deep tire tracks in the fresh lawn.
By the way – the garden shed/tool shed will also be built only next year – but I want to have the gravel base prepared for it this year (due to the same access issue).
