Dear IKEA fans,

I would like to build a fully freestanding kitchen island using Faktum base cabinets. My questions are: is it possible to leave IKEA base cabinets freestanding, meaning not screwed to the wall? Are there also standard-sized cover panels for backs, or only for sides? If not, my alternative idea would be to place two 37 cm deep (15 inches) cabinets side by side (instead of a single 60 cm deep (24 inches) cabinet, which would then result in 74 cm deep (29 inches)), but how would I handle the cooktop in that case? For that, I need a base cabinet at least 60 cm deep (24 inches), right? I hope my plan is understandable.

Best regards

This forum seems really great ... thank you! I will definitely ask more questions in the future.

Just a general question: Would you recommend IKEA electrical appliances for the kitchen, or is it better to go for other brand products? I would prefer to buy everything in one go at IKEA, but my husband is skeptical.

Also: Can I install a cooktop on a standard base cabinet with drawers? Where would the cables run then?

If you can find these appliances elsewhere with a 5-year warranty included?
Induction cooktops with the same features at such a "ridiculously low price"?
Ovens with electronic thermostats under 500 euros (about $540)?
Microwaves from Whirlpool that are full of patents?
A dishwasher with a sliding door front under 1200 euros (about $1300)?

It’s all a question of price/performance ratio.

Yes, you can, but you need to install an intermediate shelf, which is also available at IKEA.

Ah yes, I forgot about UTBY.

Regarding stability, I don’t understand Z.’s point. Even if someone thought about placing a cooktop in the room without side counter space, a countertop would still be installed on the cabinet. If the countertop is screwed to the cabinet, it provides lateral stability, even if the top panel is completely omitted.

The last series of electrical appliances lacked some features that other brands have had for some time. With the newer models, this has improved. You just need to look at what is available on the market and what matters to you. If you were to buy AEG, there should be no reason to choose the IKEA appliances made by Electrolux.

Regarding the price-performance ratio, I have to say that when I bought a new oven two years ago, Siemens offered me a better device than the best IKEA model for a lower price (not considering IKEA’s longer warranty). You just have to shop around.
