We wanted to hang the Billy wall shelf but ran into problems with the screws.

Has anyone installed it and has experience with the screws? Since there are only two mounting brackets, I’m wondering what screw thickness/diameter is actually stable enough to support it? We only had 8mm (5/16 inch) wall plugs and 6x70mm (1/4x2 3/4 inch) screws left, and since it was Saturday evening, we decided not to proceed because it felt quite insecure to me. For comparison, the lacquered shelf was attached with five 8mm (5/16 inch) wall plugs and corresponding screws and is much lighter.

I would be very grateful for any tips or experiences.

Hi,

IKEA products almost never come with screws or wall plugs for mounting. You need to go to a hardware store and ask an employee which wall plug and screw are suitable for your type of wall. IKEA, of course, cannot know if you have a concrete, gypsum, clay wall, or a masonry wall.

Just tell the staff at the hardware store how much weight you want to hang, and everything will hold securely!!

Yes, thanks! – I was already there anyway (hardware store), and in the end, we went with exactly those anchors and screws we had originally considered, but I still don’t fully trust the whole thing...

Hi,

I’m also struggling to securely and reliably fix the Billy wall shelf to an older brick wall (red brick). Since the outer layer of the wall is quite porous, the shelf’s heavy weight (16 kg (35 lbs)) keeps pulling the holes for the three glass doors downward. I have now used two size 10 screws and heavy-duty anchors, but the left hole still doesn’t seem to hold properly. The shelf has already tilted about 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 inches) away from the wall at the top edge again. Since we sit at the table underneath, this feels too unsafe for me. It’s loaded with plates, with a maximum additional weight of 10 kg (22 lbs).

Basically, I find fastening the shelf with only two brackets on the outer edges a bit risky. Therefore, I plan to add two long size 10 screws with brackets in the middle compartments on the left and right sides. If that doesn’t hold, it’s going to be thrown away.

Does anyone else have experience with old masonry and the Billy wall shelf? The shelf itself isn’t to blame for the wall condition, but overall it’s not nearly as stable and secure as it appears at first glance.

Hello, for such cases there are chemical anchor bolts that are filled with resin, and a new hole is drilled into them. They are available at any good hardware store.
