We are currently planning our floor plan and are trying to decide whether to include a pantry or not. So far, we have a storage room where we also keep most of our beverages and food supplies. Our second refrigerator is also located there. We find this very practical and would like to keep it that way in the house.
However, it’s not easy to integrate a proper pantry into the floor plan. We have concerns about the utility room because of the heat. It’s probably warmer there than in the rest of the house due to the equipment. That would likely make it less suitable for storing drinks and the refrigerator. We also considered partitioning part of the utility room with a wall to create a pantry. This would fit well in the floor plan, but we wonder if a wall would really keep the separated pantry cool, or if it would just get as warm as the utility room.
How do you manage all your beverage crates and bottles? Where do you store them?
Best regards
Herr Stein

HilfeHilfe15 Aug 2018 07:25We have a storage room. There is a medicine cabinet, a shelf with various odds and ends (gift wrapping, bath toys), a mop, vacuum cleaner, drinks, and milk.
We don’t have a pantry but a very large kitchen. Everything can be stored there.
I know my parents bought and stocked up on 5 pallets of canned food.
Those times are behind us now.

Everything that doesn’t fit in the kitchen, such as drinks, cans, etc., goes into the utility room (our heating system is in the attic). Potatoes and similar items go into the storage room by the garage. If that is still too warm, I’ll dig a hole in the garden for a larger clay pot or something similar.
A storage chamber in the utility room shouldn’t have a different temperature...

So if drinks are already considered too sensitive to be stored in the utility room, what else would be allowed there? Either they are drunk at room temperature anyway, so a difference of 2-3 degrees doesn’t really matter, or they go into the fridge.
Also potatoes... I keep them in a container in a high kitchen drawer. Or do you seriously store 20kg (44 lbs) sacks?

Potatoes should ideally be stored at 8°C (46°F) and always kept in the dark. You can also just eat them and buy new ones.

But even in the supermarket, everything is done wrong.Because it’s unnecessary. No one expects them to last for months.
The same goes for eggs; supermarkets don’t refrigerate them either.
