Hello everyone

We are currently in the preliminary planning phase and are working on the layout for our living/dining/kitchen floor. It comes down to either having a really spacious kitchen with lots of cabinets and storage or a somewhat smaller kitchen with less countertop space but including a pantry.

What are your experiences with this? Which option would you prefer and why?

Kind regards

I don’t see any space for a pantry. The kitchen as drawn only allows for making sandwiches, microwave meals, and coffee.
There is a lack of countertop workspace.

What has not yet been mentioned is where the second refrigerator, freezer, and beverage crates will be stored, as well as food items that cannot be kept in cupboards. If you have to go from the first floor down to the basement for this, it can be inconvenient.

Personally, I would also vote against having a pantry!

If the kitchen’s location is to remain unchanged, I would rather lean towards a design with tall cabinets along the exterior wall combined with a cooking/cleaning island. There is quite a bit of space along the wall, so it should be possible to fit tall cabinets for storage, household appliances, fridge/freezer, etc. The pantry would be about 3m (10 feet) wide, so at least 5 tall cabinets could fit there, and there is still room towards the dining area. Then you would have a large cooking/cleaning island, which can definitely look very stylish. Alternatively, you could place the cooktop along the exterior wall, with, for example, 2 tall cabinets on either side, then 3 regular cabinets under the cooktop (centrally positioned), with wall cabinets above. And then a large cleaning/prep island in the center!?
