Hello everyone,

I have a problem with my KALLAX shelf from IKEA. After moving the shelf to a different spot in the apartment, the doors no longer fit properly. They don’t close flush, some hang crooked, or even stick. My KALLAX has two doors, which I removed and reinstalled when moving it. The hinges seem to have shifted, but I’m not sure how to adjust them correctly so the doors fit properly again.

Is there a way to fine-tune the door hinges so the doors close cleanly and no longer stick? I’m looking for detailed instructions, possibly with tips on the best approach or what to watch out for to ensure the adjustment holds over time. Has anyone dealt with this issue and can offer advice?

Thanks in advance!

Hello jangu48,

With KALLAX doors, you can usually adjust the hinges in three directions: vertically, horizontally, and in depth. Using a Phillips screwdriver, you can turn the screws until the door fits correctly. Pay special attention to the screw that adjusts the depth, as this ensures the door closes flush with the cabinet frame.

Often, the lever on the hinge cover is also important. Simply turn it carefully and test. Good luck!

Hello jangu48,

I can understand your situation well; these kinds of adjustments can indeed be tricky if you’re not familiar with them. Here is a more detailed explanation:

The KALLAX doors are mounted using so-called clip hinges. These usually have three adjustment screws:

1. Vertical screw – allows you to move the door up or down.
2. Horizontal screw – lets you adjust the lateral gap, meaning how closely the door fits against the frame.
3. Depth screw – controls the distance in the installation area and ensures the door closes flush.

If the doors no longer fit after moving the room, it could be because the screws loosened during removal, reinstallation, or when shifting the shelf, or the position of the holes has changed.

My tip: First, take the door off, tighten the hinges firmly to the case (the shelf unit). Then rehang the door and try to slowly adjust the fit using the three screws. It’s important to turn the screws gently and repeatedly check how the door closes.

Careful, precise work will bring success here. If the hinge is damaged, it’s worth replacing it; the cost is moderate.

I hope this helps you!

I agree with that – to look at the topic entirely from a technical perspective: The hinges on KALLAX are so-called full-extension hinges, which actually allow for very precise adjustments and offer several degrees of freedom. To correctly readjust the doors after moving the shelving unit, I would proceed as follows:

1. Remove the door: Simply pull the door panel forward and slightly lift it at the top hinge bracket, then the hinge will release from the shelf unit.

2. Check the hinge bracket on the shelving unit: Sometimes minor damage or misalignment can occur during transport, preventing a perfect fit. If something is damaged, it can often be fixed or replaced with little effort.

3. Adjust the hinge:
- The horizontal screw (usually the front screw on the hinge arm) allows you to move the door sideways to close gaps or correct alignment.
- The depth adjustment (usually the middle screw on the mounting plate) lets you move the door closer to or farther from the cabinet frame.
- The vertical adjustment (usually via screws on the hinge attachments inside the shelving unit wall) controls the height.

4. Make incremental adjustments after each small movement, repeatedly rehanging and closing the door to check the fit.

5. It is also recommended to check that the doors are evenly loaded when closing together, since imbalances often overload the hinge and cause adjustments to shift.

If you cannot find the exact screws, I can describe typical IKEA hinge types with pictures.

That is correct, but it is important to follow the sequence of adjustments; otherwise, you go around in circles. First height, then horizontal, then depth.

Hey jangu48!

It sounds like your KALLAX doors got a bit misaligned during the move 😉 I’ve experienced this myself, so here’s my tip:

Sometimes a little “fine-tuning” with a screwdriver, just like Espen said, is enough. My method: only turn one screw slightly at a time (usually a quarter turn is enough), then test closing the door. This way, you avoid the frustration of constant adjustments.

Otherwise, it can turn into endless trial and error.

When the doors hang perfectly straight again, they almost make the furniture look like new 😊.

One more tip from me: at the end, tighten the screws firmly so nothing loosens when the shelf wiggles after the next move.

Good luck and let us know how it went!
