Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to outfit my IKEA Besta shelving unit to hold many heavy devices such as hi-fi systems, amplifiers, and some larger electronic equipment. I am wondering: Will the IKEA Besta shelving unit become unstable if it is fully loaded with many heavy devices due to the weight and resulting stress?
I am particularly interested in whether the construction of the Besta system, its anchoring, and the material thickness allow it to remain stable under higher loads over a long period. Are there any known weak points to watch out for?
Thanks for your assessments and experiences!

I am also interested to know if there can be sustainable material fatigue when the shelf is permanently loaded with very heavy weight.Yes, MDF tends to bend under constant load. Therefore, do not exceed the recommended load limits.
So my tip would be, if you have a lot of heavy equipment, the shelving unit could also be more stable if you use a few tricks:
- Reinforce the shelves underneath with small metal brackets or wooden strips.
- Place the shelves on stable floors, not directly on carpet.
- Always distribute everything neatly and evenly; otherwise, it will wobble.
This way, the whole thing stays stable and also looks good – and you can safely put a few extra kilos (pounds) on the shelves.

What also helps is to ensure that when combining multiple Besta elements, they are mounted on a continuous back panel – this adds extra stability and prevents lateral twisting.
If possible, connect the modules to each other using clamps or screws.
This way, the whole setup becomes significantly more robust, even when heavy items are stored inside. 😉
