Hi. Does anyone have a DISKODANS blackout roller blind and can tell me how it works when rolling it up? I can’t make sense of page 15 of the manual – does it mean it retracts automatically? If so, how does it work and from what length? I only want to pull it out about 80cm (31 inches).
Very light purple, almost pink.
I don’t understand why they have two product names. They look the same to me. Anyway, I actually want to repurpose them* and it would of course be good if they stay at the height where I want them. Hm. I need to think about it again. I would like to avoid side operation because of the cats, as the blind would be at floor level.
* I need to cover an 80cm (31.5 inches) wide kitchen cabinet, which can’t have doors fitted, to protect it from grease splatters in front of the stove. The cabinet is temporary, so one year would be fine. The alternative is a shower curtain, but yuck, those are ugly. The back side of the blinds, on the other hand, could be suitable. Need to think it over.

IKEA-Experte13 Jun 2016 15:40Don’t the critters scratch the roller blind? Would an aluminum venetian blind work? Oh wait, that also has a cord. Hanging oilcloth in front just looks a bit cheap. Quickly wiping it down isn’t really possible with the Ikea blackout roller blinds.
How is it possible that no doors fit on a cabinet?

Oilcloth was the first idea, but it doesn’t work well as a curtain because the material is bulky. A shower curtain that can be shortened is still being considered, but the designs are always so awful. The back of the blinds is rubberized, right?
Scratching wouldn’t be too bad and could be tolerated, but I’m not willing to take the risk of hanging accidents during play.
I can show later why a door isn’t an option. It’s only a temporary solution until we can buy a proper kitchen after the renovation. Whenever that happens.

IKEA-Experte14 Jun 2016 14:37The roller blinds are relatively thin compared to other blackout blinds. They tend to flex noticeably when wiped without a backing and might potentially develop some bulging over time.
Denting wouldn’t be such a big problem either. It would just be a temporary solution until we can install a proper kitchen in 2017… hopefully.
Because of handling, we might just go with an ugly plastic shower curtain instead, hmm.
Attached is a picture showing why doors won’t work:
We will have an 80x37 cm (31.5x15 inches) cabinet where we’ll store items in the back/right side that we don’t need frequently (casserole dishes, roasting pans, picnic dishes, etc.) and beverages and cat food on the left. In front of it, there will be a curtain or blind to prevent everything from getting splattered when cooking on the stove.
The cabinet will be placed centrally next to the 40x60 cm (16x24 inches) cabinet, because of the heating pipes and valves behind it and also because otherwise we wouldn’t have good access to the interior due to the stove (which is also why we can’t have a 60 cm (24 inches) deep cabinet). Doors wouldn’t work either if the 37 cm (15 inches) deep cabinet were placed all the way against the wall, since you could hardly reach inside (see photo).
I know it’s far from an ideal situation.
Primarily, what matters to us is the countertop on top, because right now it’s only 30 cm (12 inches) deep, which makes space tight for the kettle, coffee machine, etc.
