Hello everyone, I am currently facing the task of precisely cutting and professionally installing the countertops for my Ikea METOD kitchen. Since this is a very exact project, I want to make sure I donât make any mistakes that would be costly or labor-intensive to fix later on.
I am particularly interested in which tools and cutting techniques are best suited for the different materials of the METOD countertops (e.g., wood, laminated, stone-look accents). Additionally, tips on how to install them accurately to avoid gaps and ensure the countertops are securely positioned would be helpfulâespecially when it comes to corner joints and the connection to the cabinets.
Are there any proven installation recommendations, for example regarding any necessary moisture protection treatment beforehand or the use of specific fastening materials?
I look forward to practical advice and shared experiences!

Important when assembling: Always place the countertops on the carcasses first and secure them, then fasten with the original mounting brackets. Donât forget edge moisture protection, especially around the sink! Keep gap widths to a maximum of 2 mm (0.08 inches) â this looks neat and provides protection.
Hey everyone, great topic! Last year, I customized and installed my METOD countertop myself â itâs really enjoyable, especially when you see everything fitting perfectly!
Important: Donât be afraid of cutting! I used a good jigsaw with a guide rail and then smoothed the edges with a sanding block, the result was really high quality.
Oh, and when assembling, definitely use proper clamps! They hold the panels firmly and make the work much easier. đ

Thank you for the encouraging words and helpful advice!
I am also curious if anyone has experience with recessing or supporting countertops, especially around the corners.
The Ikea METOD countertops come in various thicknesses and materials: Is it better to use continuous slabs for U-shaped kitchens, or are multiple pieces joined together with connectors a better option?
Also, how can you achieve clean transitions visually, without ending up with unsightly seams or sharp edges later on?

Regarding the transitions:
In the U-shape layout, both continuous countertops and sectional installation are possible, depending on the length and transportation route. Due to the standard width of 63 cm (25 inches) for Ikea countertops, continuous installation is only feasible in exceptional cases.
The usual connections are made with the supplied connectors (METOD connectors), which are attached underneath. It is essential to align the countertop edges precisely and tighten the connector screws evenly and not too tightly to avoid deformation.
For the joints, I recommend using color-matched silicone or acrylic sealant that remains flexible and can accommodate minor expansions. This prevents cracks or unsightly gaps.
Cutouts, such as for the sink, should be treated with the sealing strips and edge seals recommended by Ikea to prevent moisture penetration.

Recesses such as those for the sink should be sealed with the gaskets and edge sealants recommended by Ikea to prevent moisture penetration.Exactly, and I would like to add that special attention must be paid to the substructure when dealing with corner joints. Often, the deflection of the panel differs if it is not sufficiently supported. Additional cross braces or angle elements can provide much more stability in these cases.
If the cut edges are fresh, be sure to seal them before installation. Otherwise, the wood will swell over time and the panel will be damaged. For corner installations, an additional gap of 2-3 mm (0.08-0.12 inches) helps, which you can later seal with flexible joint sealant.
