Janni140328 Jul 2008 01:06I’m currently working on the garden design. Right next to one side of the patio, I want to create a small rock garden. Maybe some of you have a rock garden and could share a few tips with me. Since I have no experience with this kind of thing but really like rock gardens, your help would be much appreciated. Thanks! 🙂

A rock garden is truly an eye-catcher in any garden. It is important to plan it carefully and choose the right location. It would be ideal if the area where you want to create the rock garden slopes gently, about 10°. The site should be oriented towards the south. A rock garden needs plenty of sun! However, if it receives about 2–3 hours of shade per day, that would be optimal, as otherwise the soil can become too hot. You can also create an artificial mound. The substrate must be well-draining; if necessary, a drainage layer can be installed.
To define the rock garden, edging stones are used. Various types of rock are suitable for this purpose. You can use sandstone, granite, or slate, for example. Limestone is not suitable if you plan to grow plants that are sensitive to lime. Locally sourced rock types are best.

Hi!
I also find rock gardens particularly attractive. Could you perhaps describe in more detail how to proceed? And I’m also curious: which plants are best suited for this? Is it possible to create an herb rock garden as well? I think that would work especially well because it combines something useful with design.
Best regards,
sennor 🙂

Janni140329 Jul 2008 22:37Hi,
you have some great tips here. Thanks! So, the basic conditions on our site are almost perfect. I want to create a rock garden next to the patio. It gets sun almost all day and the ground slopes slightly. I really like the idea of a herb rock garden. It combines something beautiful with something useful. Has anyone tried this and created a herb rock garden themselves?
Best regards! 🙂

You’re right. A herb rock garden is really attractive and also practical, as you can use the herbs to enhance your cooking. You can also combine herbs with other plants that produce beautiful flowers, which makes the whole arrangement even more interesting.
The location where you plan to create the rock garden seems perfect. Now you just need to get started, and you’ll see that it’s not as much work as it seems. The soil should be a good mix of clay, sand, and compost. The ratio should be adjusted based on the plants you choose.
Stones: Large natural stones work best, placed irregularly according to your own creativity. Plants are then placed between the stones.
The following flowers are well suited:
autumn crocus, crocuses, spring snowflake, snowdrops, wild tulips, or glory-of-the-snow.
