Hello everyone.
A new neighbor in our development is installing their gas boiler and hot water tank in the uninsulated attic.
In other words, they have a cold roof, just like us.
They said they will build an insulated “box” around the equipment.

Is that possible? If so, it could be an idea for us as well! What should the wall construction of this box be like to ensure effective insulation?

Has anyone here had any experience with this?

Our plumbing company will only start in one week. Therefore, nothing is finalized yet in this regard, which can be resolved with one or two core drillings...

We already have a finished attic anyway, but yes, we also have heating and ventilation under the roof – a shorter route for the solar wiring and more space downstairs in the utility room for laundry and storage. So, I think it makes sense to keep them out of the way (under the roof).

@Nordlys please don’t forget to mention that you have a fixed staircase to the attic. Such a space can then be somewhat compared to a basement. I don’t know anyone who regularly uses the attic with a folding or pull-out staircase. Usually, it is used to store things that are needed at most once a year. And those usually don’t require even somewhat constant temperatures.

Still, the roof is there, and I don’t understand why someone wouldn’t want to use it as storage space just to save a few euros.

But it is possible. However, there is definitely a difference between having easy access via a permanent staircase and having to pull out a ladder every time. Karsten’s approach, in my view, is a fully functional cellar alternative—just as easy to access and probably with a similar climate. However, this is not the standard. I just wanted to point that out.

Of course, this is a comfort difference. Still, I believe that somewhat younger people will regularly use a warm roof even with a retractable ladder. The woman can iron there, the man can do some painting up there, fabrics can also be stored there, guest beds, and so on...
