ᐅ Interior Concrete Stair Covering – Wood, Vinyl, Natural Stone?

Hello everyone,
I will soon be moving into a newly built condominium.
It has an interior staircase (precast concrete) leading to the rooftop terrace.

There was a planned covering for the stairs that I decided to cancel because I wanted to keep my options open.

Now I am torn between different floor coverings. Originally, wood was my clear choice, but I am now considering alternatives. The criteria are:

- Appearance
- Durability
- Low maintenance
- Cost
- ...

Since the staircase leads to a rooftop terrace, the covering needs to handle moisture, dirt, small stones on shoes, etc.
Wood might not be the best solution here.

The apartment has smoked oak parquet, which would also be the wood tone for the staircase.
However, I can also well imagine matte black natural stone with white risers (e.g., painted concrete).
Instead of natural stone, vinyl could also be used, as it is available in many different designs.

From your perspective, considering factors beyond personal taste, what would be the best option?

The choice of material and whether to use a folded structure depends on the intended dimensions for the support. The comment about the geometry has come up several times already. Wooden folded structures are great – but they look poor on a staircase not designed for them, result in a higher step at the bottom, and lack a proper finish at the top.
Wood is definitely a good choice, but if it doesn't match the staircase design, it's simply nonsense.

Since there was nothing mentioned in the construction description, I asked for clarification. According to the property developer, a 1cm (0.4 inch) wooden flooring was planned. Is that even possible? What kind of quality would that be? Or does it not really matter?

A very unusual thickness. That would be typical for tiles or porcelain stoneware.

What exactly is a folded plate structure on a concrete staircase?
Isn't a folded plate staircase defined by a solid wood construction without any substructure?

Please take a photo of the staircase and show how it appears from the living areas.

Thank you. I didn’t know that they are also called folded plate stairs when they have a supporting structure underneath. Learned something new again.
