Hello everyone,
Today we received a quote from the local metalworking company for the interior railing of our 2x¼ turn staircase. Details:
- The railing runs only inside the stairwell, not on the outside.
- The railing spans 2 floors and on the top floor it should support the stairwell for 1 meter (3 feet).
- Material: flat steel, 3 knee braces, 1 upper bar on which the wooden handrail will be mounted
- Color DB703
The price is almost €10,000.
I have never requested a railing quote before, but the price shocked me for what seems to be a fairly simple railing (steel, not stainless steel, interior only, etc.).
Especially since the handrail for the outdoor stairs, just under 2 meters (6.5 feet) of coated round steel, also seems very expensive at €2,500.
It feels like I’m being overcharged here.
What do you think? What did you pay for your coated steel railing?
Thanks for your input.
Best regards,
mertmk3

This is due to the varying tread depths. The height of each step is the same, but the distance over which this height must be covered changes.
I hope this makes some sense?
I also really wanted a straight handrail and only gave in after seeing how it worked with the wooden rail: at the lowest point, a child could have easily climbed over it. If you adjust the height to this lowest point, it becomes too high at the highest point.
Additionally, my parents have a straight handrail installed on their U-shaped staircase, and I have personally experienced how annoying it can feel when your hand “moves” in height compared to your shoulder as you run it along.
Note: We have a U-shaped staircase (half-turn?). How much this affects a staircase with two quarter turns would need to be checked.
