Hello everyone,

Today we received a quote from the local metalworking company for the interior railing of our 2x¼ turn staircase. Details:

- The railing runs only inside the stairwell, not on the outside.
- The railing spans 2 floors and on the top floor it should support the stairwell for 1 meter (3 feet).
- Material: flat steel, 3 knee braces, 1 upper bar on which the wooden handrail will be mounted
- Color DB703

The price is almost €10,000.

I have never requested a railing quote before, but the price shocked me for what seems to be a fairly simple railing (steel, not stainless steel, interior only, etc.).
Especially since the handrail for the outdoor stairs, just under 2 meters (6.5 feet) of coated round steel, also seems very expensive at €2,500.

It feels like I’m being overcharged here.

What do you think? What did you pay for your coated steel railing?

Thanks for your input.

Best regards,

It only concerns the stairwell opening, which is still rectangular. Therefore, nothing changes about it. Nothing will be curved.

Do the steps taper to a point or not?

Yes, they converge at the top. However, this does not affect the railing.

Hold a straight batten or something similar at the height of the handrail and observe whether and how the distance between the batten and the top edge of the steps changes from one step to the next.

At first, I didn't want to believe the staircase builder that we needed a curved handrail. After the demonstration, I realized it; in our case, the staircase is probably even more curved than yours.

Do you think the distance between the handrail and the stair tread varies? Yes, that is naturally the case. Did you then choose a handrail with a height that curves? Do you have a picture?

Exactly, we then chose a curved handrail. The balusters of the railing are also curved accordingly. However, I don’t have any photos of it.
