ᐅ Kitchen Island / Work Island – Which Ventilation System?

I have seen different cooktop islands and ventilation variations at friends’ places. I always get the impression that the extractor hood over a cooktop island is not as effective as with a regular cooktop in the kitchen countertop. Since I often need a lot of space for cutting and food preparation, I would like to have a large working island. Personally, I don’t mind facing away from the guests while cooking. Do you have any experience with this? Cooking on the island or on the main kitchen countertop? And which type of extractor hood is truly powerful?

Thank you in advance!

We would have installed a Berbel with a kitchen island as well. The concept simply convinced me, even though it is expensive.

On our peninsula, we will have a second sink – designed as a workspace rather than a cooking island. It was more important for us to have extra space for chopping and preparation, rather than having a setup with the cooktop free-standing.

We have the same setup and are VERY satisfied with it. That is also the most frequently used area for us.

The stove (with Bora downdraft ventilation) plus the second sink are arranged along a 4.5m (15 feet) long kitchen counter with hanging base cabinets beneath two clerestory windows.

Hi!

A second sink on the work island would also be my favorite. For us, it was not feasible due to both size and budget. I consider it the optimal solution.

We also went for a downdraft system. Even the best Berbel extractor doesn’t look very attractive and slightly spoils the kitchen’s appearance. We decided on the system from Neff. It costs more and there is some loss of cabinet space, but since our kitchen is integrated into the living area, aesthetics are very high on our priority list.

Both systems basically work well. Most of the time is spent on preparation, so actual cooking time at the stove is shorter. Nevertheless, it’s really enjoyable to cook while facing the room. Especially since there are plenty of “quick” dishes where you spend most of the time at the stove—pancakes, for example. Looking at a wall the whole time versus looking into the room was an easy choice for us.

Oh, and the sink is also on the island since most of the preparation is done there. Basically, almost everything is done on the peninsula for us, so we could practically have done without the rest of the countertop.

We have one too. It’s great.
Finally, dishes and vegetables no longer have to compete for the same faucet.
Our sink for washing dishes is large enough to fit an entire baking tray. Except for the Muurikka, everything now fits entirely in the sink.
