Hello everyone!

I would like to know if hardwood flooring in the kitchen is a good or bad idea. What are your experiences? I am planning to make some changes to my kitchen.

Wishing you all a great day!

If you have water damage in the kitchen, you also need to remove the tiles to dry the screed.
Moisture does not penetrate the joints of wood that has been surface-treated afterward.

Years ago, our dishwasher broke and leaked. We just wiped the tiles dry and that was fine. Is your parquet regularly maintained under the kitchen cabinets? Later, we rented a house with parquet flooring in the kitchen, which was simply a bad experience. I am familiar with both situations. It wouldn’t work for me, but of course everyone can decide for themselves. After all, this is about sharing experiences.

It naturally depends on the water damage.

We have solid hardwood flooring. Just like with tiles, individual planks can be removed and replaced if desired. Unlike tiles, however, wood tends to look better with each scratch rather than worse. But of course, tastes vary.

Personally, I wouldn’t install hardwood flooring in the kitchen. I don’t have any experience with it, but I imagine it could be challenging: if it’s lacquered or oiled, the finish on the high-traffic areas will probably wear off quite quickly, right? Of course, it also depends on how often and for how long the kitchen is actually used. But anyone who spends hours cooking or washing dishes by hand will likely wear down the finish fast. As I said, I’m not an expert. I just notice from my old kitchen, which is now 45 years old and being replaced this year, that even in front of the stove and sink the tile finish is gone. Instead of beige, those areas have turned brown.

And when I think about how often a piece falls when peeling beets and I accidentally step on it... I definitely prefer tiles for that.

But overall, I believe you should just do whatever you like. Anyone who really values hardwood in the kitchen will certainly take care of it accordingly. I’m not a cleaning fanatic, so the new kitchen will have tiles again—especially since there’s direct access to the terrace where stones will probably stick to shoes that might be wet.

I can only say that our parquet floor has been serving us well for years. My wife, who has damaged discs in her spine, is happy because standing on hard tile flooring causes her significant discomfort.

I had this in my old apartment years ago, and after a few years the floor looked really bad. Personally, I wouldn’t do it again. Now we have tiles, which are really easy to maintain.
