Hello everyone,

I have a Billy bookshelf from IKEA that quickly accumulates pet hair due to my two long-haired cats. A lot of hair gets stuck especially in the grooves and along the edges. I am looking for effective ways to thoroughly and gently remove this hair without damaging the wood or the surface.

Does anyone have tips for cleaning pet hair specifically? What tools (e.g., special brushes, cloths, sprays) have you used? And is it better to take the shelf apart for cleaning, or can it be done well while it’s still assembled?

I look forward to your experiences and suggestions!

Hello tauylvi,

to remove pet hair from a Billy shelf accurately and thoroughly, I recommend the following multi-step approach:

1. Remove all detachable parts, especially the shelves, to access hard-to-reach areas.
2. Use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment or a crevice tool to remove the coarser hairs. Use a low suction setting to avoid damage.
3. Then, take a slightly damp microfiber cloth to wipe over the surfaces and edges. The mild moisture helps to trap hair and dust.
4. For stubborn spots, wear rubber gloves: put on the gloves, dampen them slightly, and rub the surfaces. The friction will loosen hairs.
5. Rinse the microfiber cloth regularly during the process.

Make sure not to use any harsh cleaners, as Billy shelves are usually melamine-coated or made from particleboard and can be sensitive to moisture and chemicals.

One more question: Are your cats long-haired or short-haired? Depending on that, regular grooming might be helpful, as it significantly reduces hair shedding around the room.

Regarding gentle cleaning, I have another recommendation:

Use a rubber brush that is also used for furniture and upholstery. It works well on pet hair due to static charge and does not damage the surface.

A damp cleaning cloth with just water or a mild dish soap solution can also help, as it attracts hair without leaving harmful residues.

The key points summarized:

- Avoid using aggressive chemicals to prevent damage to coatings
- Use microfiber cloths, rubber brushes, and vacuum attachments as standard cleaning tools
- Removing shelves for better access is usually sufficient
- Regular cleaning is more effective than infrequent, intensive sessions

This warning is crucial and should definitely be heeded.

Thanks for all the great tips here!

At first, I was worried that cleaning might actually push hair deeper into the shelf, but the combination of vacuuming and using a microfiber cloth worked really well for me.

I’ll try that next time, sounds reasonable.

Has anyone had experience using a lint roller for clothes on these kinds of shelves? Or does it leave any residue somewhere?

Regarding lint rollers, I can say that they do work quite well, but you need to be careful because they can leave streaks or adhesive residue on delicate surfaces.

For BILLY shelves, which are usually melamine-coated, I would prefer using rubber brushes or microfiber cloths.

Lint rollers are less suitable for corners and edges, as they only provide good results on flat surfaces.

Thank you very much for the detailed and very helpful answers!

I find the tips about using rubber gloves and rubber brushes especially interesting, as I haven’t tried that yet.

My cats actually have long hair, which probably makes the problem worse. I will likely step up their grooming to reduce the amount of hair.

I plan to completely clear out the shelf soon and then clean it step by step using the recommended methods.

If anyone has additional tips for grooming long-haired rabbits or cats, I would be happy to hear them. Thanks again to everyone!
