A hip roof is mainly used for houses that feature strong symmetry in geometric shapes. A hip roof is typically constructed as a truss roof structure.
The truss roof structure consists of so-called wooden trusses. One disadvantage is the loss of usable space in the attic. There is limited floor area in the attic. Has anyone given thought to how an alternative roof design might create more space? I’m not sure if, for a square-shaped house, a hipped roof could be an option, among others. In a discussion here, I read about a carpenter’s roof, but there was no image or drawing provided, so I cannot visualize what that looks like.

There are also self-supporting ones. We use the roof as storage space without obstructive cross braces.

A crane lifts a large roof panel onto scaffolding; two workers secure the component.

Why do people use pitched roof structures when there are simpler self-supporting options available? Is it due to the significantly higher costs?

First, this is common only for “substitute villas” – and even there mainly for the version with a 90m² (970 sq ft) footprint, a house as small as the budget allows. Secondly, a pyramid roof is essentially a hipped roof without a ridge, which can easily be fitted with a ridge if desired: this is simply done by introducing a barely noticeable difference in roof slope and is often used when the development plan strictly requires a specific “ridge direction.” The rafter roof is popular for substitute villas because it serves as an inexpensive “lid” and on a square plan a gable roof tends to appear as if the eave side is shorter than the gable side.

In a thread here, I read something about a carpenter’s roof,

… which probably refers to a standard common rafter roof. Pinot grigio just sounds trendier than Grauburgunder.

There is no technical necessity for a truss roof. Those who want to use the space under the roof are poorly served by it.

You can work with different timber dimensions and calculate differently.

I think "simple" is a myth in this context. The ring beam has to work a lot harder, I would say.
