Hello everyone,

I am currently planning my move and facing the challenge of carefully disassembling and transporting my Ikea Metod kitchen units. Since these are modular kitchens, I want to avoid any damage during disassembly or transport as much as possible.

My question to the community is:

How can I dismantle the Ikea Metod kitchen units without putting unnecessary strain on the individual parts? Which tools and methods are especially useful? Are there any tips for safely packing and transporting them, especially if the furniture needs to be moved several kilometers (miles)?

I would really appreciate detailed advice and experiences, as I definitely want to start at the new place without any damage or hassle.

Thank you in advance!

Hey zenelus! 🙂

Your question is right in my area—I managed to get my Metod kitchen through the last move practically intact despite all the stress! First of all, a big tip: really give yourself enough time! Rushing is the biggest enemy when dismantling.

In terms of tools, you should definitely have a cordless drill with the appropriate bits ready (Phillips, possibly Torx, depending on the hardware). The hinges and connectors (cam lock, dowel) can be removed quite quickly with these.

What really helps is to remove the cabinet doors and shelves beforehand. This makes the carcasses lighter and easier to handle. Keep the screws and small parts in one place, ideally in labeled zip-lock bags—you’ll find them much more easily during reassembly.

For transport, it’s best to stand the carcasses upright and place padding or blankets between them to avoid bumps. If you have to stack parts, always put protective layers in between.

It sounds like a lot of work, but if you work carefully, it’s really enjoyable! Good luck, and feel free to share how it goes!

Hello zenelus,

I would like to add some detailed tips that might help you with the stress-free and safe disassembly and transport of your Ikea Metod kitchen.

First, regarding disassembly:
- Always unplug the dishwasher or refrigerator, if integrated, before loosening the hinges and connector fittings.
- It’s best to use the original Ikea Allen key or a suitable bit set for the cam locks. A cordless drill with a torque limiter helps prevent over-tightening.
- Important point: remove all shelves, drawers, and doors before taking apart the carcasses to reduce weight and avoid possible damage.
- Take extra care with corner cabinets, as they often have connecting profiles that are easier to bend. Loosen these gradually.

For packing:
- Cover all sensitive edges and surfaces with painter’s tape or foam pads.
- Secure loose parts such as baseboards or handle profiles separately and label them clearly.
- Transport the carcasses upright, preferably in a van with padding. Avoid stacking them flat or lying down to prevent deformation.

If you like, you can share details about your furniture measurements and means of transport. Then I can give you more targeted advice on potential problem areas.

I wish you good luck with your move!

This is truly an essential point.

In addition: It’s best to take photos of the cabinets before disassembly. This way, you can check during reassembly whether all parts are correctly positioned.

Some also recommend applying a bit of wax to the screw holes of the hinges. This makes it easier to remove the dowels while maintaining load-bearing capacity.

A tape measure, cordless drill with various bits, and preferably non-slip gloves are very helpful! Handling the often heavy carcasses becomes much easier this way.

And finally: Always get help when carrying; it’s definitely worth it. This helps avoid unintended bumps and scratches.

Good luck!
