Hello everyone,
I am considering using the IKEA KALLAX shelf unit as a permanent kitchen island in my open kitchen. My main questions are: How practical is the KALLAX for this purpose, especially regarding stability, storage space, and ease of cleaning? Can such a setup be integrated smoothly into everyday kitchen use over the long term, or are there significant drawbacks I should be aware of beforehand? I would really appreciate any experiences or tips from you, particularly from practical use over extended periods. Thank you in advance!

I’m curious how you handle water resistance in the kitchen? The shelf is melamine-coated, while the top surface is a separate kitchen countertop that I screwed on top – this provides very good protection against water and scratches.
In the kitchen, no liquids should come into contact with the edges of the shelf, as they are a bit more sensitive. Therefore, I make sure nothing stays there.
So it’s more of a moderate solution where protection is the main focus. The KALLAX itself is not a surface that directly comes into contact with water, but rather the countertop on top.
Brief and concise, based on material data and construction:
The KALLAX shelving system was not designed for kitchen use. The maximum load capacity of each cube is about 13–15 kg (29–33 lbs), which is sufficient for light kitchen utensils. However, the overall construction may lack stability under heavy loads (countertop, heavy appliances, cutting tasks).
The height of approximately 147 cm (58 inches) does not meet standard kitchen work surface heights (85–95 cm / 33–37 inches), which is ergonomically unfavorable.
For permanent use as a kitchen island, I recommend using furniture with a more suitable frame construction and appropriate work surface height. However, the KALLAX can serve as a temporary solution or decorative furniture piece.
In summary: Not ideal for a permanent kitchen island, but usable with limitations.
