maucevdet4 Feb 2020 08:47Hello everyone,
I am considering using the IKEA KALLAX shelf unit as a permanent kitchen island in my open kitchen. My main questions are: How practical is the KALLAX for this purpose, especially regarding stability, storage space, and ease of cleaning? Can such a setup be integrated smoothly into everyday kitchen use over the long term, or are there significant drawbacks I should be aware of beforehand? I would really appreciate any experiences or tips from you, particularly from practical use over extended periods. Thank you in advance!

Is it possible to integrate such a construction smoothly into everyday kitchen use over the long term? That’s a really good question! I used my KALLAX as an improvised island for a few months, and what can I say – it works, but with a few caveats. 😉
The storage space is definitely great and perfect for spoons, napkins, and similar items. However, it becomes unstable if you want to use the shelf as a work surface, for example with cutting boards or heavy pots. It really needs reinforcement or a thick countertop on top. Cleaning is easy since the material barely absorbs water. So, I believe the KALLAX can work, but not fully as a kitchen island—more as a nice addition. 🙂

wonderfully suitable for spoons, napkins & suchHello,
let me approach this a bit more structured. If you want to use the KALLAX as a kitchen island, the following points should be considered:
1. Stability: The KALLAX is not designed to support extremely heavy loads. Therefore, I recommend adding a thicker countertop on top and reinforcing the unit from the inside with brackets. This will prevent wobbling during use.
2. Storage: Very good, as the cubes can be used very flexibly, for example with baskets or drawers. This allows for organization and easy access.
3. Cleaning: The material is melamine-coated, making it resistant to moisture. However, the open compartments can collect dust. Here, I would suggest doors or boxes.
Summary: For long-term use, professional reinforcement of the top is important. Cleaning and organization benefit from additional accessories. This way, the KALLAX becomes a real kitchen helper.
As an addition: I agree with the points mentioned and would like to address ergonomics. A KALLAX shelving unit is approximately 147 cm (58 inches) tall, which places the work surface significantly higher than the typical kitchen countertop height of 90 cm (35 inches). Over time, this can cause strain on the shoulders and back, especially when cutting or kneading frequently.
If the shelving unit is used only as a storage space or a small helper, it is suitable. For a main work surface, I would recommend another solution or at least adjusting the height measurement.
Additionally, you should consider whether to equip the shelving unit with casters to make it mobile or fix it in place. Mobility offers advantages but requires a stable attachment; otherwise, it may wobble too much.
Overall, the KALLAX can work as a kitchen island but needs to be well adapted to the kitchen and its intended use.

Hello,
just a brief opinion from my side:
I have been using my KALLAX as a kitchen island daily for about a year. Regarding stability:
I fixed the top board with screws and supported the entire unit from the ceiling with two thin steel cables, which noticeably reduces any tipping movement. Storage space is great, especially if you use small boxes. Cleaning is easy, as the top surface is smooth.
On the downside: The unit is not designed to hold very heavy kitchen appliances. Also, the height really takes some getting used to, but for me, it was fine after about a month.
All in all: It’s doable if you modify it a bit and understand its limitations.

When cooking or washing dishes, splashes are common. Does the material hold up well against moisture over time? Have you applied any surface treatment to protect the KALLAX?
Overall, the shelving unit seems quite versatile, which I find very appealing for small kitchens. I don’t have long-term experience using the KALLAX as a work island myself, but it would be a big advantage if it performs so well in everyday use.
