ᐅ Is it possible to retrofit soft-close mechanisms to Ikea Pax wardrobes?

Hello everyone, I’m currently considering whether I can retrofit soft-close hinges to the doors of my Ikea Pax wardrobe. The doors don’t have this damping feature at the moment, and I think soft-close would significantly improve the comfort and also help protect the hinges over time.

My questions are:
- Does Ikea officially offer a retrofit solution or compatible soft-close hinges that can be easily swapped in?
- If so, how complicated is the installation? Are special tools or drilling required?
- Are there third-party alternatives that fit well?
- Does anyone have experience with such retrofits on Pax?

I’d appreciate any concrete advice, preferably including tips on potential issues or pitfalls. Thanks in advance!

If I replace the hinge completely with a soft-close model, how does door adjustment work?

Good question!

Most soft-close hinges compatible with Ikea Pax offer the same three adjustment options as the originals:
- Horizontal (left/right)
- Vertical (up/down)
- Depth (toward or away from the cabinet)

This means you can precisely align your doors even after replacing the hinges. This is especially important for larger doors.

A tip: When installing, first tighten all screws only by hand, then make the final fine adjustments before fully tightening.

An additional note: Soft-close mechanisms usually work through an integrated hydraulic damper that slows down and gently cushions the closing process.

It is important to pay attention to the load capacity and type of hinge (e.g., overlay vs. inset) when purchasing, to avoid mechanical conflicts with the existing furniture.

Furthermore, depending on the model, it may be necessary to slightly adjust the position of the hinges if the new ones have different dimensions.

I recommend carefully checking the measurements before buying and, if possible, bringing sample hinges for comparison.

A few months ago, I converted my own Pax doors to soft-close.

- I replaced the original hinges with soft-close models that are “clip-on,” meaning they simply snap into place.
- This eliminates the hassle of dealing with screws on the door; adjustment is still done via the usual adjustment screws.
- Important: The doors must have the same hinge cup diameter (usually 35mm (1 3/8 inches) cup hole).

The result is very clean, and the soft-close function works reliably. I chose not to use additional dampers alongside, as that seemed too fiddly for me.

Retrofitting soft-close mechanisms on Pax wardrobe doors makes sense, especially since the doors are used frequently every day.

You could almost consider it a small everyday upgrade, similar to automatic dimming headlights in cars.

But honestly, does anyone know if installing soft-close afterward actually extends the lifespan of the doors? I imagine the damping also prevents the hinges from getting damaged, right?

That is exactly a reasonable assumption. The soft-close damping reduces the mechanical impact of the door against the frame. This lowers the stress on the hinges and their mounting points.

In the long run, this can have a positive effect on durability, especially with frequently used doors.

However, it should be noted that only a high-quality soft-close system provides truly reliable damping.

Soft-close for Pax: Simply replace the hinges with soft-close ones. Also available from Ikea. No additional drilling required.

Pay attention to cup size and series.
