Hello everyone, I’m currently considering whether I can retrofit soft-close hinges to the doors of my Ikea Pax wardrobe. The doors don’t have this damping feature at the moment, and I think soft-close would significantly improve the comfort and also help protect the hinges over time.
My questions are:
- Does Ikea officially offer a retrofit solution or compatible soft-close hinges that can be easily swapped in?
- If so, how complicated is the installation? Are special tools or drilling required?
- Are there third-party alternatives that fit well?
- Does anyone have experience with such retrofits on Pax?
I’d appreciate any concrete advice, preferably including tips on potential issues or pitfalls. Thanks in advance!

I recently did this and can say it's really worth it. At first, I was skeptical because I hadn't expected the effort to be so straightforward.
But with some patience, the replacement went smoothly. Since then, the doors have become much quieter and close gently.
A small tip: The instructions in the Ikea online store are very helpful for understanding the hinge positions.

Since then, the doors are much quieter and close smoothly. This is the main advantage of soft-close hinges: increased comfort combined with noise reduction.
A small addition: For particularly heavy doors, it’s advisable to use reinforced models with higher load capacity. Otherwise, the damping may weaken over time.
It can also be helpful to replace the hinges gradually, one pair at a time, to avoid losing the door or having to make extensive adjustments.
Thank you all for the helpful information! I will probably go ahead with replacing the hinge, as it seems like the best solution to me.
The tips on measurements and adjustability especially helped to clear up my concerns.
If I bother you with more questions again, I hope you will be patient.
