Hello everyone,
I am planning to furnish my apartment with Billy shelves from IKEA, but I’m not sure if these classic, rather simple shelves blend well with other furniture styles. Specifically, I’m wondering: can Billy shelves be combined nicely with styles like country, industrial, or modern design furniture without the overall look appearing inconsistent?
Does anyone have experience or tips on how to harmoniously mix different styles? I want to avoid the space looking too busy or unbalanced. I would also appreciate recommendations on color choices, arrangement, or accessories. Thanks!

I would like to add a very human aspect here: Above all, you should feel comfortable in your living space. It’s not a problem if styles are mixed to some extent, as long as you can personally identify with them.
That’s true, but you can creatively resolve style clashes with personal favorites and small changes. You don’t have to make everything perfect; allowing a bit of playful freedom is important.
That makes the home lively and unique.

A common mistake is placing Billy shelves simply without context next to very heavy solid wood furniture. That tends to look rather unsettled.

It’s great to see so many helpful ideas coming together here!
Last year, I used Billy shelves combined with a cool industrial-style sofa and simple wooden crates as side tables. It worked perfectly and looked really stylish!
My tip: If you use rugs or cushions in a color that matches the shelves or furniture, everything visually blends together seamlessly.
Have fun decorating :-)

I would like to add a small but important tip:
When combining Billy shelves with other furniture styles, it is worth paying attention to the flooring and wall color.
For example, a dark wood floor and neutral wall colors make it easier to combine Billy and solid wood furniture, as they provide the necessary calmness in the room.
Exactly, I completely agree. The surface textures should complement each other, not compete.
The eye needs harmony, which is often achieved through coordinated materials.

Be cautious with very different shades and finishes: Glossy and matte furniture can clash.
