Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to assemble the Ikea Besta shelving unit, but I no longer have any of the original screws available. My specific question is: Can I assemble the Ikea Besta without the original screws if I use comparable replacement screws? I am mainly concerned whether this could affect the stability or the fit, or if there are certain screw types that must be used.

Additionally, it would be helpful to know if there are differences between the screws included in various Besta packages, or if standard furniture or wood screws can simply be used.

I want to avoid assembling the cabinet incorrectly or having it become unstable later on. Thanks in advance for your insights and experiences!

If the replacement screws have the same dimensions (length, diameter) and thread, it should not be an issue. It is best to use screws designed for wood or furniture, as metal threads are uncommon for Besta.

Good question! Usually, the Besta system is built a bit “flexibly,” so it’s not rocket science. 😄 If you screw like a pro and the replacement screws are similar, it should be fine. Make sure they’re not too long – otherwise, you’ll end up with holes in the side panels or worse. A little patience in finding the right replacement screw is your friend. That way, it will be stable and neat.

Good luck with the assembly!

Additional information:

1. The original Besta screws are usually chipboard screws with flat heads, typically about 4 mm (0.16 inches) in diameter.
2. When replacing them, it is especially important that the thread matches the material, meaning a wood or chipboard screw should be used.
3. Screws with shafts that are too short or with incorrect threading can significantly reduce stability.
4. In addition, using the wrong material (e.g., metal that is too soft) can cause breakage under load.
5. Replacement screws should not be used for threaded studs and metal connectors, as these are dimensioned differently.

Conclusion: Yes, you can use replacement screws if they are technically identical. Otherwise, it is better to buy original parts or obtain precise replacements.

Differences can occur, especially with metal connectors, as Ikea often uses special screws here that are not completely interchangeable even with local hardware store options. For the main panels and shelving parts, standard wood or particleboard screws usually work well, as long as the length and diameter match.

If you don’t have the original screws and no exact measurements, I recommend first getting an inexpensive set with various furniture and wood screws and testing them on a piece of scrap wood if necessary.

Important: Be sure not to use screws that are too long, so you don’t damage the back panel or side walls. It’s better to measure several times than to risk drilling a new hole.
