I have a rather specific question: I own an Ikea Besta shelving unit that I am about to assemble. Unfortunately, I am missing the original screws because I bought the furniture secondhand, and the previous owner apparently did not include them. My question is: Is it possible to assemble the Ikea Besta securely and stably without the original screws?
I am not only concerned about basic stability but also whether alternative screws are truly comparable in terms of material quality, size, and functionality, so that the furniture remains durable and does not lose stability. Additionally, I am interested in any recommendations for suitable screws if the originals cannot be used.
I know Ikea often uses special fasteners, so it is important to me not to make compromises that could lead to an unsafe structure later on.

I agree with fredle and blapau: The combination of original connector parts and matching screws is crucial.
If original parts are not available, I would recommend purchasing a replacement set for Ikea Besta or looking for compatible wood connector systems at a specialist retailer.
Cheap screws without the appropriate connectors can make the shelf unstable and, in the worst case, become a safety hazard.
