Hello everyone

We keep having disagreements about this topic.
How did you build your house? With or without a basement?
On one hand, I think: More space just means more room to store more stuff.
I have also considered compensating for the space by having a large double garage.
An attic would "also" be available then.

Hmm.....

I would appreciate your experiences.
I’ve also heard that not having a basement can be problematic because of moisture?
And cold from below?

I don’t have exact figures yet, but I’m expecting additional costs of around 30,000 euros compared to a slab foundation. For the basement, I’m thinking of a bar, table tennis table, foosball, darts, laundry room, office/guest room, and fitness corner. That means no office or utility room on the ground floor where the space is most valuable. I really hope we can manage it including the basement.

And how many years will the foosball and darts actually be used?

The layout reminded me of a 1970s-style basement at first glance.

We do enjoy playing, but out of necessity, it’s always at friends’ places or in pubs. Besides, wasn’t everything better in the past?

I just wanted to point out the often decreasing usage. Now, this can completely take a back seat when you have children. With children, there are also very frequent phases that change quickly. Especially when you suddenly get the chance yourself.

What are the advantages of garages? I only know one, which is the door. But never mind, I don’t want to start another debate here. I just wanted to share my view on the potential pros and cons of having a basement.

In our garage, the car is always frost-free in winter, the mentioned door offers some protection, and in summer it’s not as hot inside. That’s enough of an advantage for me.

A carport also keeps the car free of ice.

For me, a basement is essential – it used to be almost standard, but nowadays, due to costs, often not. However, everyone has to decide for themselves – both sides usually find their (pseudo) arguments for and against.

You’re building for yourself, so you have to live with the hopefully well-considered decision.

So, my neighbor was just scraping under his carport. I still maintain – carports and basements are worthless TO ME. We simply don’t have anything that we would store in the basement.
