ᐅ BILLY shelf wobbles after I added shelves: Why?

Hello everyone,

I have a Billy shelving unit from IKEA that has been very stable so far. However, after adding some additional shelves, I noticed that the unit now wobbles a bit and doesn’t stand as firmly as before. I installed the shelves exactly in the designated positions and checked that they are properly seated.

My question is: Why does the BILLY shelving unit wobble after adding shelves? Is there a technical or structural reason why its stability might be affected by this?

I would appreciate any advice, including how to best fix the problem if possible.

Check if all the shelves are at the same height and whether the side panels are straight. If the side panels are warped, adding an extra shelf will only cause more instability.

This could be a serious issue. A shelf that is unevenly positioned can make the entire shelving unit unstable. Just remove all the pins again and carefully reinstall the shelves.

If you have mounted the shelf to the wall, loosening or missing wall fixings could cause it to wobble. Without a back panel and wall brackets, any piece of furniture becomes less stable, especially with multiple shelves.

Thank you for the responses so far.

I have rechecked the back panel and all screws are firmly in place. The shelves are all correctly positioned, and the metal pins are as stable as they originally were.

The floor where the shelf unit stands is fairly level, but there is a slight height difference of about 2 mm (0.08 inches).

Now to my question: Can such a small height difference cause a wobbling movement when there are more shelves installed? Or should the shelf unit remain stable despite this?

Second point: I notice that the wobbling mainly occurs when the shelf is lightly bumped, not when it is loaded. I believe the weight itself is not excessive.

Absolutely yes, especially with tall shelves. Even a few millimeters (fractions of an inch) can cause the furniture to tilt and become unstable. The shelves increase the leverage effect, particularly when positioned higher up.

I recommend adjusting the leveling feet as needed, using washers or placing a wedge beneath them. This often makes a significant difference.

This is typical for a lack of lateral stability. The added weight from the extra shelves can cause minor deformations in the side panel, which become visible with slight movement but are compensated under load.
