Hello everyone, I am currently considering the IKEA Billy shelf and wondering if it is generally possible to modify the shelves themselves, or to customize them more or less as a DIY project. Specifically, I am interested in whether there are practical methods to alter the depth or width of the shelves without compromising the stability of the unit or affecting the shelf supports.

The shelving unit is modular, but the shelves come in fixed dimensions. Are there any experiences with cutting the shelves yourself, either using the original material or other materials made to fit? I would also appreciate tips on how to best modify the fixing points or drill holes if the shelf is shortened or widened.

Thanks in advance for your expertise and advice!

For the jigsaw, I recommend a fine-toothed blade suitable for laminate or metal

That’s exactly what I did too! 🙂

@Usgla4 It’s really amazing how clean the cuts turn out when you take your time.

A quick tip: If you want to make the shelf sturdy and load-bearing, you can attach small metal brackets to the front corners of the shelves – these provide extra support, especially if you have cut the shelf boards yourself.

So go ahead! This will definitely be a great upgrade to your BILLY shelving unit.

My shelf will only bear moderate loads, mainly books and DVDs

That reassures me, since books do exert a certain amount of pressure. 🙂

Maybe I can add that it’s important to distribute the loads evenly. It’s better to have more shelves in the unit than fewer that are too heavily loaded.

If you have the opportunity, I would also recommend regularly checking the shelves if you’re building it yourself – watch out for any deformation or sagging.

And if something gets stuck or becomes misaligned, just adjust it without getting frustrated.

I wish you continued success and, above all, enjoyment with this project.

One more small tip from a professional tinkerer: If you change the depth, make sure when inserting the shelves that the back panel still fits flush within the shelving unit. Otherwise, the entire frame can become more prone to tipping over.

If you decide to cut the back panel yourself, you should adjust the fastening points (brackets, nails) to ensure a secure fit.

By the way, marking or engraving the drill points with a steel ruler and a sharp center punch (awl) prevents slipped drill holes, which saves time and frustration.

I also recommend using the original brackets for maximum stability, but for creative modifications, consider adding flexible supplementary supports.
