Hello everyone, I am currently planning to replace my Billy bookcase with a new order. I noticed that there seem to be different quality levels and production locations, which vary in material thickness, workmanship, and stability. I am especially interested in hearing about your experiences with the different quality versions. Are there specific details to watch out for when buying to avoid getting a lower-quality model? For example, differences in the shelves, the back panel, or whether different screws and material thicknesses actually make a noticeable difference in stability? I want to avoid being disappointed after assembly if the bookcase does not offer the expected durability. Thanks in advance for any tips and advice!

Can you say something more about the shelves themselves – for example, are there different thicknesses and finishes?

The shelves do vary in both thickness and finish, yes. One option is a melamine-coated surface, which is resistant to scratches and moisture. Some shelves are also laminated, which offers slightly less durability against mechanical stress.

An important detail: If you plan to load the shelf heavily, I recommend shelves that are 16 mm (5/8 inches) thick with a melamine coating – they hold up better under high weight.

Also important: align the shelves properly and secure the dowels correctly.

Absolutely, improper securing can quickly lead to instability or sagging shelves. When assembling, I would definitely use a spirit level and the right tools to ensure everything fits correctly.

Hey eddyben, that’s a great topic! 🙂 I recently ordered my Billy bookshelf in the thicker version and I’m really happy with it. The shelves are really sturdy, perfect even for books!

With the wall mounting installed, the shelf stands rock solid, no wobbling at all!

Look forward to it—it’s really fun to set up. And if you have any questions, just reach out, we’ll figure it out together! :-)

I would like to provide a more detailed explanation regarding manufacturing and material differences:

IKEA actually produces different batches, where the quality can vary somewhat. Newer batches often feature slightly thinner panels to reduce material costs; however, stability is usually compensated for by technical adjustments such as reinforced edge smoothing or improved nailing of the back panel.

For example, the difference between hardboard and pressboard in the back panel can significantly affect the overall rigidity of the shelf, especially when the shelf is subjected to heavier loads. Hardboard is denser, which helps minimize warping of the structure.

My recommendations:
- Check the product label before assembly (variations are often encoded in the item number).
- When ordering online or in-store, specifically ask for the thicker shelf board version.
- If necessary, reinforce the shelf additionally with small steel brackets, especially for longer shelf boards.

This is particularly important for intensive use or heavy loads.
