Hello everyone,
I recently bought a Billy bookcase from IKEA and after assembling it, I noticed that the doors do not open properly. Specifically, the doors get stuck at one point when opening, although the hinges appear to be installed correctly. The gap between the door and the bookcase is uneven, which seems to be the cause.
I have already tried realigning the doors, but so far without success. It feels as if either the hinges don’t fit perfectly or the wood is warped.
Has anyone had experience with how to correctly adjust the doors so they open and close smoothly? Are there any tips on which screws to tighten or loosen, or special tricks during assembly?
I would really appreciate any helpful advice!

My tip is to first completely remove the door and check all the hinges[…] If you want, I can also provide you with a step-by-step guide.Thank you for the detailed advice, Tommy38! I haven’t tried fully removing the door yet. A step-by-step guide would be great, as the individual screws look very similar to me, and I don’t want to make any mistakes.

Have you checked if the shelf is really level? The shelf is fairly level, but I haven’t specifically checked for unevenness with a spirit level. I will do that, thanks for the suggestion.
Certainly, here is the step-by-step guide:
1. Carefully remove the doors: At the hinge, you will find small metal clips or a screw securing the door. Slightly lift the door and gently pull it out.
2. Check that the hinges are firmly attached to both the cabinet and the door; tighten any loose screws slightly.
3. Rehang the door, keeping the screws initially loose.
4. First, adjust the screw for horizontal alignment so that the door is centered.
5. Then adjust the screw for vertical alignment so the door closes evenly at the top and bottom.
6. Finally, adjust the depth so the door is not protruding too far or pressing into the cabinet.
7. After each screw adjustment, open and close the door until it moves smoothly.
This requires a bit of patience, but with time you’ll get the hang of it. Good luck! 🙂

One more thing not to overlook: With BILLY shelves, it can help to check the cushions on the door hinges. Sometimes the small plastic strips on the inside of the doors are shifted or bent, which can cause them to jam.
Also check if the screws holding the back panel are overtightened, causing the wood to warp too much within the frame.

I would add: If the doors have two different opening directions, both should be adjusted symmetrically in the same way; otherwise, the appearance will not work.
Also often overlooked is the order: horizontal adjustment before vertical, otherwise the door may sit flush but could hang crooked.
