I plan to use my IKEA BILLY bookcase as a room divider in my living room. My question is how to increase the stability of this shelf, as it tends to be somewhat wobbly when used as a room divider without being attached to a wall. The usual wall mounting is not possible for me since the back does not face a wall. Does anyone have experience with alternative stabilization methods? Possibly through additional bracing, securing it to the floor, or other tricks to make the shelf more stable without affecting its appearance too much? I want to prevent it from tipping over, especially when it is loaded from the side. Thanks in advance for any helpful tips!

A stable setup of a BILLY bookshelf as a room divider without wall mounting is generally possible but requires some measures. I recommend the following approach:

1. The feet: Although IKEA does not offer extra heavy-duty feet for BILLY, you can consider using special furniture feet from a hardware store to make the bookshelf higher and more stable.

2. Floor anchoring: If possible, you can screw the bookshelf onto a sturdy base plate that is larger than the bookshelf’s footprint – this distributes the load over a wider area.

3. Cross-bracing: Metal brackets or diagonally installed rods can be added inside the bookshelf. This significantly increases its torsional stiffness.

4. IKEA accessories: There are hardboard back panels – the thicker, the more stable. An additionally reinforced back panel or a custom-made panel might be worth considering.

5. Load distribution: Store heavy items at the bottom and lighter ones on top. This lowers the center of gravity and reduces the risk of tipping.

In short: base plate plus bracing plus heavy load at the bottom. This keeps the bookshelf stable and prevents tipping. Good luck!

That sounds logical, but I am skeptical whether such makeshift methods are really sufficient, especially if the shelving unit is freestanding and heavily used as a room divider. BILLY is actually designed for wall mounting – without that anchoring, its stability is inherently limited.

Are there any experiences with professional alternatives, such as glued or screwed cross braces, stabilizing metal frames, or similar solutions? Or perhaps even a similar shelving unit with a more robust base that can be recommended as a room divider?

I ask because a wobbly or even tipping shelving unit is not just annoying but can also be dangerous. Therefore, one should not rely solely on DIY tricks but, when in doubt, choose a product that is fundamentally designed for use as a room divider.

I have secured my BILLY room divider shelving unit to the ceiling using metal brackets. This provides excellent stability without the need for a wall.

Alternatively, you can place heavy shelves at the bottom and add weights on the lower level. This significantly reduces the risk of tipping.

This is brilliant, so many great tips coming together here! 🙂

I’ve stabilized my Billy bookshelf as a room divider using anti-tip straps attached to the wall and a thick wooden board at the bottom. No wall at the back? No problem—using a heavy base and additional interlocking methods, you can make it really stable!

Important: Always load the shelf with heavy items at the bottom and lighter ones on top. This way, it will stand very securely. Don’t hesitate—this will look really cool and ensure your space is divided while the shelf stays rock solid! 🙂
