ᐅ Automated nighttime irrigation – does anyone do this?

Hello,

Currently, it is quite dry everywhere, which has made the lawn here look like straw. I have heard that some people now use a timer to water their lawn at night, for example at 2 a.m., resulting in a beautifully green lawn.

Does anyone have experience with this? What exactly is needed for it?
So far, I only have a hose splitter with two outlets connected to my outdoor water tap, each running a polyethylene (PE) pipe with pop-up sprinklers. Until now, I have had to manually turn on the outdoor tap in the late afternoon and open the valve on the splitter for the desired PE pipe. Of course, this can be quite inconvenient and inefficient in the long run.

I am also installing this in the walkway of my patio slab. It can be installed flush and the cut edges are covered.

I’m not aware of any drive-over options off the top of my head. I would probably consider other manufacturers like Gardena for this. Alternatively, you could use a suitable metal box and install the connection inside it or have a nice free-standing tap on the side.

Sorry, I was away for a few days.

It doesn't have to be driveable.
I’m just concerned about the Gardena thing—if I embed it into the pavement and later need access to the connection, I’d have to start removing the stones around it.

The idea of a metal box is actually quite nice... then the "connection piece" would be easily accessible inside the box...

But basically:
The Gardena has a 3/4" connection.
How do I connect a 1" (32mm) PE pipe to that? Probably with the right fittings.
But does that make sense? Or would the Gardena restrict the flow?

If you set something into the paving and want to access the connection later... well, then you’ll have to remove the 5 paving stones. No matter which company the box is from.

There are fittings available from 32mm (1 1/4 inch) PE to external threads of your choice. You can screw on a hose connector or whatever else you need. Since you’ll probably want to disconnect the hose, only a quick-connect system with a constriction will work. But that’s not a problem. For permanent installation, you’d rather use a 3/4-inch hose clamp. However, you probably don’t want that in the paving.

Let's assume 30 liters per square meter (1.0 gallon per square foot) for a heavy summer rain; then just one summer downpour would fill my cistern halfway again.

To clarify: Yesterday's heavy rain added 5,800 liters (1,530 gallons) to my cistern, which should be enough until the next rainfall.

Since I’ve been interested in the Hunter Hydrawise for a while, I finally treated myself to it today for 160.-. What this system can do would take ages to build manually and on foot in home automation.
