Hello everyone, I recently purchased a kitchen using the Ikea METOD system and am now facing a challenge during the installation of the drawers that’s been on my mind: How can I install the METOD drawers so that they glide smoothly while the soft-close feature is optimally adjusted?

I’ve noticed that my drawers sometimes feel rather stiff and the soft-close function doesn’t always work consistently. It seems to be related to the alignment and the damping adjustment.

- Step 1: Use a spirit level to check that the side panels are perfectly vertical and parallel.
- Step 2: Attach the drawer runners exactly at the specified drill holes, but don’t fully tighten them until the end. Temporarily fixing them allows for small adjustments.
- Step 3: Hang the drawer and check if it slides smoothly without catching anywhere.
- Step 4: Adjust the soft-close damping correctly: usually, you can fine-tune the damper on the runner. Tip: start testing at the lowest setting and then adjust gradually.
- Step 5: Very important: avoid using excessive force during assembly. Screws should be tight but still allow for fine adjustments.

Common mistakes I see:
- Runners installed unevenly
- Damper set too tightly, which can slow down the drawer
- Drawer front mounted incorrectly, causing the weight to be distributed unfavorably

That’s correct, the right runner usually has these sliders that can be pushed in or pulled out, depending on how strong you want the damping to be.

If the drawer slows down too abruptly, simply loosen it slightly; that is usually enough.

I want to add some technical details and possible challenges regarding METOD drawers to this thread.

The smooth operation of the drawers depends heavily on the correct installation of the metal runners – there are a few important points to consider here:

- When inserting the runners into the carcasses, be sure to position them precisely, especially with regard to the correct height alignment and parallelism of the rails. Even small deviations of one to two millimeters (about 0.04 to 0.08 inches) can have a significant impact on how smoothly the drawer runs.

- The dampers on the METOD slides operate via a small hydraulic system. Some models offer mechanical adjustment, often through a small white or gray slider that can modify the end damping. It’s best to adjust this with the drawer slightly pulled out to test the effect.

- My tip for installation: first tighten screws only by hand, then hang the drawer and open and close it several times to feel for any play in the construction. After that, fully tighten all screws to ensure a secure fit.

- Glide bearings or plastic guides should not be treated with oil, as grease attracts dust over time and will reduce smoothness in the long run.

That’s a good question, and one I hear often. In my experience:

- If the drawer still slams shut too hard, gradually increase the damping.
- Important: The drawer should stop softly before slamming but should not get stuck while closing.

I would agree with that. Sometimes just a small adjustment of the front panel can make everything run more smoothly.

One more tip regarding installation: Also check if the drawer sides (inside) are damaged or warped – this can have a major impact on how smoothly the drawer operates.
