Hello everyone,

I am currently exploring ways to stylishly personalize IKEA Brimnes furniture. The series is very functional and affordable, but many find it a bit too plain and standardized. I am especially interested in simple yet tasteful techniques or ideas to visually enhance BRIMNES pieces without requiring much effort or special DIY skills. Perhaps there are clever tips regarding colors, handles, adhesive films, or additional elements that allow you to tailor the furniture to your own interior style.

Does anyone have experience with updating dressers, bed frames, or shelves from the BRIMNES series to make them more fashionable without compromising their practical use? Who has tried something and can share insights on durability and effort involved? I look forward to well-informed and inspiring responses!

Hello RUDOLFUS,

Regarding your question: Yes, BRIMNES furniture can actually be customized quite easily and stylishly, even with little effort. I’d like to share a few proven options with you:

- Changing handles: Often, the handle itself is the focal point. BRIMNES comes with standard handles, but you can easily replace them with metal, leather, or wood handles, which immediately elevates the appearance.

- Films and adhesive vinyl: Matte, textured, or patterned films that you stick onto fronts or surfaces are an excellent way to add color and texture. Just make sure to use good quality vinyl to avoid bubbles forming quickly.

- Paint: In principle, you can paint BRIMNES furniture with special furniture paint such as acrylic or chalk paint. It’s important to sand well and use a sealant to keep the surface durable.

- Accessories: Small additions, such as wooden top panels, cushions on the bed frame, or decorative elements on the surface, also enhance the overall look.

- Lighting: LEDs attached under shelves make the furniture look more modern and interesting.

These methods don’t change the basic structure of the furniture much and are suitable for beginners. If you have any questions about specific points, I’m happy to help!

In addition to the methods mentioned, I recommend paying attention to details that will influence the character of the BRIMNES furniture in the long term without compromising its functionality.

- Handles: There are standardized mounting dimensions, so when changing handles, suitable screws and spacing must be considered. Durable metal handles with a matte finish are recommended for a modern look.

- Surface: Since BRIMNES is coated with melamine, paint does not adhere well without a primer. Sanding and applying a bonding primer are necessary to achieve a lasting color change.

- Interior fittings: Additional shelves or drawer inserts can enhance both the appearance and usability.

- Alternative materials: Instead of adhesive films, decoupage techniques can be used to permanently attach paper or fabric, provided a lacquer coating protects the surface against abrasion.

- Sustainability: It is also important to consider whether materials, such as fabrics or adhesive films, are environmentally friendly and do not negatively affect the furniture over its lifespan.

Conclusion: Fashionable customization is technically possible but requires careful preparation to achieve visually appealing and durable results. For DIY beginners, small changes like replacing handles are the easiest.

I am a bit cautious about using films. Especially for furniture like BRIMNES, which is made of particleboard with a melamine film, the surface is often not perfectly smooth, and cheap films tend to lift or bubble over time where there are small irregularities.

That matches my experience: Anyone experimenting with paint should definitely use a good primer and sealant; otherwise, the result can quickly look unprofessional.

One more point I’d like to add: The popular customization of BRIMNES furniture really depends on the style you want to achieve. A very minimalist or Scandinavian look may benefit more from elegant handles and neutral colors, while retro or boho styles often work better with patterns and bold colors.

I do wonder, though, whether the effort for sustainable, unique furniture elsewhere (e.g., at flea markets or with handmade one-off pieces) might exceed the wave of affordable DIY customizations on BRIMNES. Still, for people with limited time or budget, the customization tips mentioned here are definitely practical.
