Hello everyone,
I have a question that came to mind while planning a new interior concept with the IKEA PLATSA system: Are there versions of IKEA PLATSA with hinged doors?
I understand that PLATSA is mainly known for its modular design and is often equipped with sliding doors, flaps, and open compartments. However, I’m specifically looking for modules that open with classic hinged doors—that is, doors mounted on hinges that swing open rather than sliding sideways.
I ask because I need a compact but flexible solution where a swinging door mechanism offers advantages over sliding doors—such as better use of interior space or simply because I find the operation more natural.
Has anyone had experience with whether IKEA offers PLATSA units with hinged doors, or is this system strictly limited to sliding doors and flaps? If so, are there any practical tips on where and how to order these doors or how to retrofit them as an alternative?
I look forward to your insights and advice.

Are there any versions of IKEA PLATSA with hinged doors?Basically, it is important to consider not only the door style but also its practical suitability for the PLATSA system. As far as I know, the strengths of PLATSA lie mainly in open and modular units, which typically use sliding or folding doors rather than hinged doors.
Hinged doors require hinges with clearly defined mounting points and precise tolerances, which are not always ideally addressed in this system. This is because the base modules are designed to be relatively flexible and adaptable to different sizes, which makes fixed hinge attachments more challenging.
However, I expect that in retail or through special offers or selected versions at IKEA, individual PLATSA components with hinged doors might occasionally have been available. However, I am not aware of any definitive evidence, so I look forward to the thread’s input: Is this rare to find or simply not part of the official range?
My recommendation for the person asking: If hinged doors are essential, one could consider purchasing standard PLATSA carcasses and possibly custom-making or adding suitable hinges and doors. This, however, requires considerable DIY skills. A premium solution or a different product system might also be a practical alternative here.
I would like to go into more technical detail here.
PLATSA was designed with flexibility and modular adaptability in mind. This means the carcasses and interior dimensions are very customizable and standardized, but the doors are mainly designed as practical click-mechanisms for sliding doors and flaps. Hinged doors, on the other hand, require specific considerations in the construction:
- A frame with fixed holes for the hinges
- Reinforcements to withstand the torque of the door leaf
- Sufficient clearance for the door swing
The PLATSA system generally does not provide these features, at least not in the current standard modules.
The doors that could be considered hinged exist as “swing doors” only in certain frames, but these are more common in other IKEA systems (such as METOD kitchens or BESTÅ) than in PLATSA.
If you only want hinged doors, for example, to allow easy access and to optimize the use of interior space, I recommend coordinating with PLATSA specialty parts or add-on profiles, or having these doors made as overlays on PLATSA carcasses by a carpenter.
Other users with craftsmanship knowledge or experience, feel free to add more!

I once briefly thought about customizing something with PLATSA, but quickly gave up because of the “official” selection of doors. Sure, sliding doors or flaps are very practical when space is tight, but swing doors definitely have a certain “classic” charm – and sometimes offer more convenience.
Maybe it’s really worth considering, as sifope suggests, a combination of basic IKEA modules plus self-modified doors if you have some basic craftsmanship skills. If the doors are nicely painted or covered with a foil, the system doesn’t even have to look like a compromise.
For those looking for simple custom options: IKEA does offer some variants of PLATSA doors with hinges, which are rare but occasionally available as temporary solutions in some stores or online. However, you should check availability first, since it can vary.
It’s interesting how a product like PLATSA doesn’t always meet all expectations but clearly leaves room for creativity!
