ᐅ Are there any tools available to easily tighten the KALLAX connections?

I’m wondering if there are any specialized tools or aids that make it easier and less physically demanding to tighten the screw connections in the IKEA KALLAX shelf unit. Some of the connections on mine have become loose over time, and tightening them with a standard hex key is a bit tedious, especially when the shelf is standing against the wall with limited room to maneuver.

Are there any practical tools you would recommend, or any tricks to make tightening simpler and, above all, more ergonomic? Tips on handling or alternatives to the usual hex key are also very welcome.

This is a topic many are probably familiar with. These small screws in the KALLAX are not the easiest to grip, especially when you need to tighten them frequently.

Personally, I have often tried using a standard hex key, but it quickly becomes painful on the fingers. There are small angled extensions for hex keys that reduce the effort needed – I can definitely recommend those.

Sometimes flexible bits with a short extension piece are quite helpful, especially when the shelf can’t be moved.

How are you currently using the screwdriver? Have you considered something like that?

I would simply use a drive with a ratchet mechanism. It saves a lot of effort and time.

There are also small cordless hex drivers that fit well and can be very helpful, especially without much effort.

I understand the problem well. Especially tightening the KALLAX connections can be frustrating because they are usually located in hard-to-reach places.

A proven solution is to get a small ratchet adapter for hex keys. You can then extend it with a bit holder or a short extension bar. This makes handling much easier and allows you to apply more controlled force.

If you don’t have a cordless hex driver, I would advise against using hand tools because the angle is often inconvenient.

Another option some people use is a small angle driver with a hex bit that fits precisely on the head and can be turned easily in tight corners.

Cordless hex screwdrivers are great. They significantly sped up my work on KALLAX. Especially when assembling multiple shelves, investing in one is worthwhile.
