Hello everyone,
I am currently planning to optimize the lighting for my new IKEA Platsa shelves and am looking for recommendations for suitable LED lighting systems. It is important to me that the LEDs can be integrated as discreetly as possible, since a harmonious appearance in the room is a priority.
Are there specific LED lighting options that work particularly well with the Platsa series? What type of LEDs (e.g., color temperature, luminous intensity) and mounting systems are recommended? Are there any products that are easy to install regarding power supply and wiring?
Experiences related to heat generation and durability would also be interesting. Ideally, you could also provide tips regarding dimmable versions or controllable lighting systems.
Thank you in advance for your support!

Do you have any recommendations on how to best connect the LEDs when multiple PLATSA units are placed side by side and stacked on top of each other?I chose 12V LED systems with plug connectors for my Platsa shelves for this exact reason, available from IKEA itself or third-party suppliers. A central power supply unit in the bottom compartment with branches using flat cables.
It is important that the cables are flat and flexible so you can easily route them behind the shelves. This keeps the installation flexible and allows for adjustments afterward.
In my opinion, using several small power supplies has drawbacks due to increased cable clutter and more difficult maintenance.
I find LEDs in the PLATSA shelves simply perfect! I've done the same in my own home. Here are a few tips from me:
- Use warm white (2700K), it creates a cozy atmosphere!
- Make sure to use dimmable LEDs so you can easily adjust the mood.
- For connections, I bought special L-connectors, which keep the wiring neat and allow you to easily separate shelf sections.
Go for it, it really makes a difference! 🙂
My clear favorite, I can only recommend it!

Finally, I would like to point out that when planning, the electrical loads and the maximum length of the LED strips must be considered to avoid voltage drop.
For longer runs, it is advisable to supply power at multiple points or use cables with a larger cross-section.
Furthermore, the compatibility of the power supplies with the dimmers used should be carefully checked, as different dimming methods (PWM, analog) do not always work universally.
Summary for planning LED lighting in PLATSA shelves:
- 12V LED strips, usually warm white (2700-3000K)
- Dimmable, high-quality power supply
- Use of connectors or L-connectors for flexible modules
- Central power supply with short cable runs
- Attention to voltage drop and appropriate cable sizing
This ensures durable, flexible, and aesthetically pleasing lighting.

For plug connectors, I bought special L-connectors; this makes the wiring look neat, and the shelf parts can be easily disconnected.I can confirm that. Additionally, these connectors often can be used without soldering, which significantly simplifies installation. I also recommend thoroughly cleaning the underside of the shelves before attaching the LED strips, as this greatly improves the adhesive strength.
Furthermore, using a simple dimmer switch without complex electronics has proven reliable, as these are less prone to faults. The LED strips from IKEA or compatible third-party suppliers offer good quality and relatively easy installation.
Investing in a complete set of high-quality components is definitely worthwhile for long-term users.
