Hello everyone,

I am currently planning the setup of my new IKEA Metod kitchen and am wondering how to achieve optimal lighting. My main goal is to have good illumination of the work surfaces without glare, as well as creating a pleasant overall light ambiance for the kitchen area.

What options does the Metod range offer regarding integrated or retrofit lighting? Are there recommendations for specific light sources or systems that work well with the cabinets?

It would also be helpful to get a realistic idea of the effort and costs involved, especially when adding lighting to existing cabinets.

Looking forward to tips and experiences!

IKEA Metod kitchens can be equipped quite well with LED strips and panels to optimally illuminate both work surfaces and the surrounding area.

I recommend using dimmable LED under-cabinet lights to allow flexible adjustment of light intensity. Installation is usually done directly under the wall cabinets, and care should be taken to ensure even light distribution to avoid shadows.

The color temperature is also important: Warm white (around 2700–3000 K) creates a cozy atmosphere, while neutral white (around 4000 K) is better suited for task lighting.

For those interested in technology, smart systems can be integrated, which can be controlled via an app or voice commands. However, the technical requirements (e.g., power outlets, wiring) must be taken into account during the planning phase.

This is a key point: many underestimate how frequently shadows can occur with single light sources when they are improperly positioned. An alternative to individual spotlights or strips are continuous LED panels, which provide much more uniform illumination.

I would also question the overall lighting design: why limit yourself to under-cabinet lights only? Ceiling lights, pendant lights, and indirect lighting in the kitchen can significantly improve the overall atmosphere and are often more efficient for spatial design.

Of course, cost must be considered, but simply sticking something on quickly is, in my opinion, not sufficient if you value quality and functionality.

That's a good point – I already have ceiling lighting installed, so my main focus is on effectively illuminating the work surfaces. That’s why I’m concentrating initially on options under the upper cabinets and in the toe-kicks.

Would it be possible to combine both types of light, for example using two different bulbs? I imagine that way you would have enough light for working, while still creating a comfortable lighting mood otherwise.

It is definitely possible to combine two different color temperatures in a kitchen, for example with separate circuits for task lighting and ambient lighting.

In practice, I recommend mainly using LED strips or modules with adjustable color temperature (Tunable White). Although these are somewhat more expensive, they offer the flexibility to change the light color depending on the time of day and needs.

Additionally, I would make sure the LED lighting is dimmable to avoid overly bright light in the evening hours.

For IKEA Metod kitchens, there are suitable mounting systems and often directly compatible connectors available that simplify installation.

Hello, I wanted to add that IKEA itself offers some lighting solutions specifically designed for the Metod models. Both upper and lower cabinets can be equipped with various lighting systems, such as LED spotlights, light strips, or light panels.

- If you want to retrofit existing cabinets, clamp or magnetic holders for LED lights are suitable and allow for easy installation.
- For work surfaces, it is advisable to choose non-glare lighting, meaning a beam angle or cover that distributes the LED light evenly.
- Make sure the lights are approved for kitchen use and heat-resistant, especially when installed near cooking areas.

Important: Safety always comes first, especially with DIY installations and plug connections.
