JaelnonHello everyone, I have a somewhat specific question that has been on my mind for a while: Are there really issues when ordering replacement parts for Billy furniture from IKEA, or are such reports mostly isolated cases?
About two months ago, I tried to order a replacement part for my BILLY shelving unit – specifically one of the small plastic stops for the back panel. I encountered difficulties with IKEA, both online and in-store. Therefore, I’m curious if others have had similar experiences: Could the problem be due to production changes, supply chain issues, or perhaps customer service?
I believe it’s important to look at this topic from different angles since BILLY is one of the best-selling furniture pieces, and replacement parts should generally be easy to obtain. Thanks for your insights and experiences!

Hello Jaelnon,
to answer your question, I’d like to go into a bit more detail. In my experience, there are actually two main challenges when reordering BILLY parts:
1. Availability of parts: IKEA has been producing the BILLY series for decades, but not all individual replacement parts are kept in stock permanently. Smaller components, such as screws or stoppers, can run out quickly depending on the store or region.
2. Cataloging and part numbers: Some parts are not always easy to find directly in the system, which can cause confusion. It often helps to know the exact product number of the BILLY unit and which specific part you need.
My advice: Before purchasing, make sure to have the item number of the furniture piece ready and ask directly at the store. Some employees are more knowledgeable about replacement parts than the online system.
Summary: Problems are not common but definitely possible — mainly due to logistical and administrative factors.

This is a topic I often hear about from friends. I can understand how frustrating it is, especially when you only need a small part to get the shelf fully functional again.
Personally, I have had mixed experiences – most of the time it went well, but sometimes it took longer than expected. The important thing is not to lose hope and to calmly contact customer service or the store.
I can only emphasize this. It increases your chances of getting the exact part and saves a lot of time.

Gloriagl107 Mar 2024 10:39I recently had an issue with a door from the BILLY shelving unit. Ordering a replacement part online was impossible. Getting it directly at the store was also difficult because the part was apparently discontinued. In the end, I modified and adapted a similar part myself.
I’m taking it easy 🙂 Of course, with such a success story like the BILLY shelf, it’s hard to always have every small part in stock. If you’re patient and don’t panic right away, it usually works out.
Note: The small plastic stoppers are often also available as universal replacement parts at hardware stores, in case the original IKEA ones cause any problems 😉
