Hello everyone, I am currently working on a project to paint my IKEA Platsa furniture myself, but I am specifically looking for affordable methods that still deliver an attractive result. Are there any experiences in this forum with cost-effective painting techniques suitable for beginners? Important information would include recommended types of paint, surface preparation, and possibly alternatives to the usual spray paint or expensive paint systems. It would also be helpful to know how to avoid common problems such as unsightly drips, poor adhesion, or uneven coverage. Does anyone have tips or recommendations for products that are easy to find at a hardware store or inexpensive online? Thanks in advance for any advice!

If someone really wants to use spray paint: be sure to apply several thin layers and always keep a sufficient distance from the furniture. Otherwise, unpleasant runs can occur. For affordable options, I find acrylic paint from the hardware store ideal; it is easy to work with and fairly economical.

To be honest – do you want to save money or achieve a good result? Many people believe that painting cheaply is easy. I would say: it takes time and good materials; otherwise, the result quickly becomes sloppy. Cheap paints can look good if you have artistic talent and patience, but the difference to more expensive products becomes obvious quite fast. That’s the case no matter how cheap you try to do it.

A fair and important question. For me, it’s really about finding a balanced approach: I don’t want to redo the furniture with maximum effort or material costs, but rather find an affordable solution that still looks good and is durable. Especially with Platsa furniture, which is quite inexpensive, I don’t want to invest much more than necessary, but I still want a nice long-lasting result.

I recommend a foam roller or a good quality brush.

That sounds reasonable; I initially thought spray paint would be easier and cheaper – thanks for the advice!

I think I will now look more closely into sandpapers and primers and maybe start by working on a test piece. Thanks for all the tips so far, they are very helpful.
