Hello everyone,

I am currently planning to redecorate my apartment and am therefore looking closely at the different furniture systems from IKEA. I came across the PLATSA system, which seems very interesting because of its flexibility. My question is: Are there any IKEA PLATSA furniture options without a back panel?

Specifically, I am wondering if it is possible to assemble the shelves or cabinets from this series without a closed back panel, for example to create a more open feel or because I want to design the back differently.

Does anyone know from experience or official information whether this is possible, or if all PLATSA models require a back panel to be installed? It would be great to know, especially considering stability and assembly. Thanks in advance!

The IKEA PLATSA series usually comes standard with back panels, which are essential for the stability of the furniture. However, there are certain designs or variations that can be assembled without a back panel, although the assembly instructions do not recommend this.

The back panel is typically made of thin but reinforcing material that stiffens the cabinet structure. Omitting it may affect the furniture’s stability or the wall mounting.

An open back is not officially offered as an option within the PLATSA range. Those willing to experiment can modify the furniture but should ensure that it is adequately stabilized by other means.

I built the PLATSA system without the back panel. You can leave out the back panel, but then you need to use other stabilization methods; otherwise, it will become unstable.

Thank you for the information. Are there any alternatives to increase stability without a back panel? Perhaps wall anchors or other sturdy side panels?

Could you provide more specific advice on how to ensure stability in that case? I would also like to know if this design is suitable for an open back or what potential limitations might apply.

I can provide a brief guide on how to stabilize PLATSA without a back panel:

- Use strong wall anchors and screws for mounting. Ideally, use appropriate metal brackets.
- Optionally, internal corner strips can be installed to prevent lateral twisting.
- If an open back is desired, I recommend attaching at least two or more anchoring points to the wall.
- Additionally, a reinforcement board can be installed on the top to stabilize the unit.

Note: Without a back panel, this only works if the unit is mounted directly to the wall or if the load inside the compartment is not too heavy. Otherwise, the frame becomes flexible and unstable.

Regarding the question of whether IKEA PLATSA furniture is available without a back panel: officially, no versions without this stabilizing component are offered.

IKEA supplies the back panel as a standard part because it significantly contributes to rigidity. Without the back panel, there is a risk of deformation and reduced stability.

If you still prefer an open back, the furniture must be securely anchored to the wall or reinforced with additional structural supports, as described in previous posts. Otherwise, stability issues may occur.
