Hello everyone, I am currently focusing on assembling a wardrobe system from Ikea, specifically the PAX system. My question is: Does Ikea offer drawers for PAX wardrobes that are especially deep, meaning with a larger internal depth than the standard drawers? I want to use them primarily for bulky or large clothing items and accessories. I have already seen carcass depths of 35, 58, and 63 cm (14, 23, and 25 inches), but I am unsure whether the drawers within these sizes differ in depth, or if only the height varies. Has anyone had practical experience or precise measurements of particularly deep drawers in the PAX system? Thank you very much for your help!
Hello yunusnu,
first, a brief clarification: The PAX system from Ikea indeed offers different cabinet depths, usually 35, 58, and 63 cm (14, 23, and 25 inches), as you have correctly noted. The depth of the drawers generally corresponds to the depth of the respective cabinet. This means that if your wardrobe is 58 cm (23 inches) deep, the drawers are designed to fit that depth—minus the necessary back panel and drawer slides.
The drawers themselves come in various heights, typically 10, 20, and 40 cm (4, 8, and 16 inches), which affects the vertical storage capacity. Regarding the drawer depth, it is determined by the cabinet depth and is identical for all drawers within the same cabinet. In other words, you cannot order a drawer deeper than the cabinet itself, as that would be structurally impossible.
Regarding your question about “extra deep” drawers: Ikea does not offer specially deeper drawers for PAX that differ from the standard cabinet depths. What you can do is:
- Choose a cabinet with a larger depth (for example, 63 cm (25 inches)) to get deeper drawers.
- Alternatively, if you need a lot of storage space in one drawer, you might consider installing larger drawer boxes or using special organizers and inserts for better organization.
Maybe you could tell us more about your available space and dimensions? That way, I could give you more specific advice on custom size options or combinations that might work well.
Best regards!

Regarding drawer depth, it is determined by the depth of the cabinet carcass and is the same for all drawers within the same carcass. I would like to add some background to this—especially with tricky furniture like PAX, it’s worth measuring and planning carefully. The effective usable depth of the drawer is usually slightly less than the total depth of the cabinet carcass because there is typically a back panel and support braces. Also, the installation can vary depending on the drawer types and interior fittings you choose.
For deeper drawers, the 63 cm (25 inches) cabinet carcass is recommended, where drawer internal depths often range from about 55 to 60 cm (22 to 24 inches). This is quite generous, for example, for thick sweaters or larger storage boxes. Drawers in the 35 cm (14 inches) deep carcasses are correspondingly much shallower in depth—really deep drawers are not achievable there.
However, Ikea does not offer custom-sized drawers for PAX. The selection varies in height, but in terms of depth, you only get the mentioned standard carcass sizes. So the question is more: How much space do you have available? Can you accommodate a 63 cm (25 inches) deep wardrobe? If so, you already have the maximum depth possible for drawers.
One more tip: Many people use pull-outs or baskets for especially “deep” storage instead of drawers, as these can extend further and provide easier access. This can work very well in combination with drawers.
What exactly do you plan to store? That will help to recommend the best solutions.

Are there any IKEA PAX drawers that are especially deep, meaning they have a larger internal depth than the standard drawers?Good morning,
to answer your question simply and clearly: No, IKEA does not offer PAX drawers with an “extra depth” beyond the depth of the respective cabinet frame. The key point is that the depth of the drawers is technically limited by the cabinet depth; otherwise, they would not fit inside the frame.
A PAX cabinet frame can be purchased in the common depths of 35cm (14 inches), 58cm (23 inches), or 63cm (25 inches). Within these frames, you can combine drawers of various heights, but they will always have the same maximum depth, which corresponds to the cabinet depth minus the space needed for the back panel and drawer runners.
If you want more volume, you should choose a PAX frame with the largest depth (63cm / 25 inches). At this depth, you will get the deepest drawers that IKEA offers for PAX.
Beyond that, you can create plenty of storage and organization by skillfully combining shelves, drawers of different heights, and accessories, even though the depth itself cannot be varied.
Could you also mention if you are planning to use the system for clothing, shoes, or something else? Sometimes alternative interior fittings work better than just having deeper drawers.
I hope this helps!

You could almost consider the PAX wardrobe a versatile all-rounder, but how exactly you intend to use the storage space is important.
I have a PAX frame with a depth of 63 cm (25 inches), and the drawers are really deep. They fit not only clothes but also drawer boxes or even winter gloves, which would otherwise get lost in the mess. The drawer depth is really great, but as already mentioned, you won’t get more than this standard depth.
If you need more space for bulky items, you could also combine it with shelves or large compartments. Drawers are great for keeping things organized, but sometimes it makes sense to think a bit more “open.”
What I like about PAX is that you can mix drawers, doors, shelves, and more. That way, you can have compartments for hangers or other items alongside the deep drawers.
I’m curious what you plan to do with your PAX!
