Hello everyone, I recently purchased a kitchen with Ikea Metod drawers and have realized that maintenance and care of these drawers are quite important in daily use to preserve their functionality and durability. However, I can hardly find any detailed DIY guides or practical advice on how to clean, lubricate the drawer slides, or perform minor repairs yourself without having to contact customer service right away. Does anyone here have experience or know of well-structured, hands-on instructions for maintaining Ikea Metod drawers? I would appreciate any tips or even step-by-step guides that can be easily done at home.

In addition to kulau’s comments, I would like to add that when removing and reinstalling the Metod drawers, it is important to pay close attention to the order and orientation.

- The left and right sides have different rails, which must be correctly assigned.
- The release levers are usually located at the back of the rail and can sometimes be a bit hidden.
- When removing the drawer, if you lift it slightly upwards while pressing the lever, the rails will come off easily.

It is also helpful to regularly check the runners for minor deformities. Especially with frequent use, the plastic gliders can break, making repairs more difficult. In this case, I recommend ordering spare parts from Ikea and replacing them.

For easier maintenance, I would also recommend checking not only the rails and runners but also the drawer bumpers. These ensure smooth closing and protect the mechanism from wear.

If your drawers creak or stick, cleaning or, if necessary, replacing the bumpers can help.

When using lubricants, please make sure to follow the manufacturer’s specific product recommendations. Often, Ikea provides special care instructions that help extend the lifespan of the plastic components.

Thank you very much for the detailed advice! I will soon try my hand at the renovation and especially pay attention to these levers.

I find the tip about the soft-close dampers particularly interesting because some of my drawers no longer close as smoothly as they did initially and sometimes make noises.

Are there any recommendations or experience regarding how often this kind of maintenance should ideally be done? I want to avoid doing it too often or too rarely and wasting unnecessary time.

Maintenance every 1-2 years is usually sufficient, unless you notice issues such as creaking or stiffness earlier.

Simply keep the door closers clean and replace them if defective.

From my experience, it’s completely normal to feel a bit uncertain at first when maintaining your own furniture parts. I was also hesitant to remove the drawers because I was worried about damaging the mechanisms.

It’s really important to approach it carefully and calmly. Once you’ve gone through the whole process the first time, it becomes much easier the next time. In my opinion, there is always a certain level of uncertainty that reflects the learning curve.

If your drawers start creaking and don’t close as smoothly, this can happen even with regular maintenance. It helps not to get frustrated but to gradually carry out small repairs and sometimes simply replace dampers or runners.

I wish you the best of luck!
