Hello everyone,

I am about to assemble my first Ikea Hemnes furniture piece completely by myself and am looking for good beginner tips to make the assembly as quick and efficient as possible. I am not only interested in general advice but especially practical tips that are specific to the Hemnes range, as I have read that these pieces can sometimes be trickier than the usual Ikea models. I have already sorted all the parts and have the instruction manual, but I would still appreciate any shared experience to help me avoid mistakes and not waste unnecessary time.

Are there specific tricks or methods that can make assembling Ikea Hemnes faster for beginners, for example, when sorting the parts, handling the screws, or the order of the assembly steps?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Hello MARIEL64,

I’m familiar with the Hemnes series and understand your concerns, especially if you’re new to furniture assembly. Here are some tips that might help you:

- Be very meticulous in sorting all screws, dowels, and boards by size and type before you start. Hemnes often uses similar screws that can be easily confused.

- Use a well-lit, sufficiently large work surface. This way, you won’t lose small parts and can keep the instructions handy next to you.

- Before assembling each section, read the instructions through completely to better understand the upcoming steps. With Hemnes, it’s important not to fasten too much too early, as some parts might not fit properly afterward.

- Use a cordless drill with adjustable torque. This helps prevent over-tightening screws and damaging the wood.

- Take a step back and double-check if something doesn’t seem to fit before screwing. This often saves time compared to having to disassemble later.

I hope this helps a bit! If you like, I can also share tips on the assembly order or specific Hemnes models, if you want.

Divide the construction phases into small, logical steps. This helps avoid mistakes and allows you to complete each phase correctly and efficiently.

Always insert all screws loosely first, then tighten them afterwards. This makes the assembly easier.

Hello MARIEL64,

your question about efficiently assembling the Ikea Hemnes for beginners is very reasonable, as Hemnes models do have some specific features that are good to know. Let me divide my answer into three sections:

1. Preparation:
- Lay out a large, clean surface, ideally a blanket or mat, to avoid scratches.
- Sort all parts and check against the instructions to make sure nothing is missing. Hemnes models include many similar parts, so mark them with small notes if needed.

2. Tools:
- A cordless drill with adjustable torque is very helpful but not absolutely necessary.
- A rubber mallet can help if parts fit together tightly.

3. Assembly:
- Read each step of the instructions carefully before starting the assembly.
- Insert all screws loosely at first to check the fit.
- Common mistakes with Hemnes are mixing up the long and short wooden dowels or tightening screws too early, which can cause the entire piece to not fit together properly.
- If possible, assemble the furniture with two people—one holds the pieces, the other screws.

Finally: Take your time—spending a little extra effort now will save you frustration later. Good luck!

I can definitely relate to that. When I first assembled a Hemnes wardrobe, I had similar problems and ended up feeling really frustrated. What helped me was taking frequent short breaks and carefully reviewing the instructions multiple times.

Also, don’t be too hard on yourself—it's normal for beginners to take a bit more time. It also builds confidence to complete smaller sections before moving on. And if you feel like discussing a particular part again later, feel free to reach out.

The time you invest will pay off in the end—the pride in your self-made furniture is well worth it!

In addition to my initial tips:
- Install the back panel only at the very end. Hemnes models sometimes require flexible assembly, so you may need to make adjustments as you go.
- You might want to label the screws with small sticky notes or use the Ikea bags to keep the parts sorted at the start; this helps a lot.
- Taking photos of the instruction manual and your intermediate steps can be useful in case you need to pause suddenly – it makes it easier to continue where you left off.

I also usually keep all the small screws in a little bowl outside the packaging, so they don’t get lost and are within easy reach.
