Hello everyone, I have owned the Ikea Hemnes furniture for some time now and currently have an issue with the surface being quite prone to scratches, even though I handle it very carefully. Therefore, I wanted to ask the community: Are there any tips for protecting the Ikea Hemnes from scratches? I am particularly interested in practical solutions that do not affect the character and appearance of the wood, so nothing like thick covers or adhesive films that are clearly visible. Additionally, suggestions on care products or cleaning routines that can help keep the surface smooth and intact for as long as possible would be helpful. Perhaps someone uses this series themselves and has experiences or advice beyond the standard recommendations? I look forward to your opinions and tips.

That’s an interesting question because I have several Hemnes pieces at home and can confirm the surface feels quite delicate. But before discussing protection methods, it’s important to consider: how big is the problem actually? Are the scratches caused by daily use, pets, children, or just surface contact?

I don’t think a general recommendation to simply apply a protective film makes much sense — it would detract from the natural wood feel and might even worsen the appearance. However, using a protective varnish or a special furniture polish that creates a hard layer could be an option. But this is where it gets tricky, because without knowing exactly which product is compatible, there’s a risk that the wood won’t be able to “breathe” or discolor.

I’d like to hear how others here find the balance between protection and preserving the natural look. Are there any official IKEA recommendations for Hemnes that you know of? And what do the manufacturer’s instructions say about aftercare? I’m quite skeptical about many so-called tips found online that are just repeated without solid explanations.

I can gladly provide some well-founded advice, as I have been using a Hemnes bed and a dresser myself for several years. The surface is solid lacquered pine wood, which is sturdy but definitely not scratch-resistant by industrial standards. Therefore, I recommend:

- Use felt pads under all items placed on the surface, especially decorative objects or lamps.
- Avoid sliding objects directly, especially metal or ceramic, without a protective layer underneath.
- Clean the surfaces only with a lightly damp, soft cloth and a mild wood cleaner; do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
- For care and light refreshment, use a furniture oil or polish specifically designed for lacquered solid wood furniture – preferably test it first on a less visible area.
- A permanent protective clear coat is possible, but be cautious with the products: a water-based clear varnish is better than solvent-based ones if you want to preserve the original condition.

In my personal experience, this approach has worked well, and my furniture still looks quite good after several years. Consistent protection during use combined with a proper care routine is key.

That’s a great tip I want to add right away.

Especially with Hemnes, which has a rather light, painted finish, even the smallest scratches become very visible quickly. Therefore, it also helps to always use small felt coasters under fragile items like vases, bowls, or candle holders. These provide cushioning and prevent hard materials from coming into direct contact with the paint layer.

In addition, I would recommend regularly using a very fine furniture wax. It basically forms a protective film over the surface.

That is really the key point! I love the look of Hemnes and don’t want adhesive films or heavy protective mats. For me, care focused on gentle cleaning, regular oiling or waxing, and above all being careful in everyday use is the best way to maintain the natural look.

If children are involved, I’d suggest not placing small sharp objects (like toy cars with metal parts) on the furniture—that often leads to damage quite quickly.

In general: the more carefully you treat the surface, the longer you can enjoy it. No miracle cure, but effort and mindfulness pay off.

I completely understand how frustrating that can be. I have a Hemnes dresser myself that has picked up a few scuffs, even though I’m very careful.

In addition to the already suggested felt pads and gentle cleaning, I’d like to share some advice on how to deal with scratches. Sometimes it helps to conceal small scratches using a matching furniture wax stick or colored pencil that closely matches the wood color. While this isn’t a permanent fix, it does improve the appearance until you can refinish the piece.

And very importantly: try not to stress too much. Furniture also tells a story, and some wear is just part of that – it makes the piece feel more personal and characterful.

I hope my contribution gives you a bit of confidence when dealing with the ongoing challenge of surface care!
